Testimonial from Ryan Johnson,
Executive Director
The St. Leonard’s Society of Hamilton
The Astra Society of Hamilton and District
Kathleen Leach served as President of The St. Leonard’s Society of Hamilton and brought nine years of committed, thoughtful service to our board. Her leadership strengthened the organization during a period of significant transition and growth.Kathleen played a central role in improving our governance practices. She guided major revisions to our board by-laws and helped modernize our governance model, creating clearer structures and stronger accountability. She was also instrumental in refining our mission, vision, and values so they more accurately reflected the work we do with the individuals we serve, and our responsibility to support community safety in Hamilton. These contributions continue to shape our direction today. When I took on the role of Executive Director, I had limited experience running an organization and stepped into the position during the early days of the COVID provincial shutdown. It was an uncertain and challenging time for everyone, and Kathleen offered steady guidance and genuine support. She checked in often, made sure I was managing the pressures of the role, and provided a sense of stability at a time when it was needed most. She consistently went beyond the typical expectations of a Board President, and her support made a meaningful difference in helping me navigate the complexities of that period.“She was instrumental in refining our mission, vision, and values so they more accurately reflected the work we do with the individuals we serve, and our responsibility to support community safety in Hamilton. These contributions continue to shape our direction today.”
Kathleen’s professionalism was evident in all of her interactions. She treated staff,
board members, and community partners with respect and fairness, and she brought
a calm, balanced approach to decision-making. Her involvement on the board was
driven by a sincere belief in supporting individuals involved in the criminal justice
system and helping make Hamilton a safer and more compassionate community.
Her commitment extended well beyond board responsibilities. During an
exceptionally demanding time for pharmacists, Kathleen took it upon herself to
provide flu and COVID-19 vaccinations to our residents. This was a clear example of
her dedication to public health, her compassion for vulnerable individuals, and her
willingness to step forward when needed.
Although we first met in a professional capacity, I have come to consider Kathleen a
valued friend. I have deep respect for her dedication to her patients, her community,
and the work she supported at The St. Leonard’s Society of Hamilton. Her integrity,
generosity, and commitment to service have left a lasting and positive impact on the
organization.
Kathleen’s contributions will continue to benefit The St. Leonard’s Society of
Hamilton for years to come, and her leadership will be remembered with gratitude.
