What a beautiful way to mark the end of our journey together. The DAHC Traditional Healing Team hosted the final Community Gathering for the Mending Broken Hearts "Odayimann" Project, alongside a Cedar Smudge Spray Workshop.

Our heartfelt thanks to Bernice Downey for sharing her powerful story and research findings, reminding us just how vital it is to create spaces for healing, learning, and connection in our communities.

This project is about helping Indigenous women feel confident in managing their heart health by educating healthcare providers about Indigenous women’s lives and approaches to well-being. The knowledge gained will be used to create training for healthcare providers and workshops for young Indigenous women, with the goal of building stronger relationships and empowering women to take charge of their heart health.

Over three meaningful days, the Brantford and Niagara Traditional Healing Program had the honour of learning from Ojibway leather artist, Mitchell Riley, of Antler River Leather

From the very first morning, the room was filled with curiosity, focus, and the quiet rhythm of hands at work. Mitchell guided participants through each step of the belt-making process, teaching not only technique, but also the patience, respect, and mindfulness that come with working in a traditional way.

Each person brought their own energy and story to the table. There were moments of laughter, moments of challenge, and a deep sense of pride as participants began to see their work take shape. By the final day, everyone walked away with something far more meaningful than a finished piece, they carried with them new skills, deeper connections, and a renewed appreciation for the teachings held within traditional crafts.

These three days reminded us that learning is not just about making something with our hands, it’s about growing our hearts and spirits together in community. 🌿🦌✨

We had the privilege of coming together at the De dwa da dehs nye>s Aboriginal Health Centre’s 9th Annual October Moon Gala on October 16th. It was an honour to present our 2025 Community Award to some truly inspiring organizations and individuals! Nya:weh/Miigwetch for everything you do to make our communities stronger, healthier, and more vibrant.

A huge Nya:weh/Miigwetch to everyone who attended, shared in the celebration, and continues to support our work. Your involvement means everything to us.

Special gratitude to our generous sponsors: IPHCC, the Canadian Medical Association, and our incredible architects and partners — McCallum Sather, David T. Fortin, Parkin Architecture, Landwise, and SpruceLabs.
