"The city is filling an overnight warming gap for unhoused men at a downtown Hamilton church this winter.

The drop-in space is expected to open Friday at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church at James and Jackson streets.

St. Matthew’s House will operate the service in a coach house on property Hamilton Urban Core Community Health Centre leases from the church.
The small cottage has room for about 30 people with the potential for more during city-issued cold alerts, noted Andrew Matthews, manager of social services with St. Matt’s.

As it stands, men have nowhere to go after Night Link closes at 11 p.m. The 25-space program for all genders, on Wentworth Street North, is operated by Mission Services.

Between them, Mission Services and the YWCA operate 80 spaces for women and gender-diverse people as part of the city’s December through March winter response.

The St. Paul’s initiative opens later than the others after the city considered locations that didn’t work out for various reasons, staff told The Spectator last week.

“It’s just been difficult to find a location that makes sense,” housing services director Michelle Baird said.

Roughly 2,000 people are experiencing homelessness in Hamilton and more than 300 of them live outside, according to city data.

Local shelters can be packed, but some people avoid them for different reasons, which include mental health and addiction challenges or fear of theft and violence. Others face temporary bans due to behavioural issues.

St. Matt’s staffs the city’s housing-focused outreach team and runs a daytime drop-in program called Cathedral Café at Christ’s Church Cathedral on James Street North."
