I am often asked this question. I struggle to have an exact definition as this can vary depending who you ask. The following is how I answer from a trauma informed perspective.

Trauma can be an awful event, situation or circumstance that has a deep impact on us, our emotions, our body, our nervous system and our brains.

The event or details aren’t as important as the impact it’s had on you.

Meaning the word trauma are things such as war, natural disasters or sexual violence. Trauma is also divorce, abandonment, neglect, job loss, chronic illness, racism, systemic oppression, loss of a loved one, infertility, bullying and abuse of all forms.

Constantly being taught to never show your emotions, or told you didn’t do that well enough, or never receiving attention, affection, love or validation.

And So. Much. More.

This is why it’s a hard question to answer.

And most likely, you’ve experienced at least one on this list. And that’s not your fault.

Now it’s your opportunity to heal from it.

Healing is a lot of things, but it isn’t linear. It is a process. It is messy, yet beautiful.

There are ups and downs, twists and turns, triggers and fears, self-awareness and change.

It is normal to take one step forward and two steps back. This is all part of the healing path. Each step of the way offers a learning opportunity and a moment of growth.

Keep taking it day by day. One step at a time.

What do you need to take a break from? Work, social media, particular people, or certain behaviours that are exhausting you. Maybe all of the above. We all need a break from time to time to keep moving forward.

Not taking breaks isn’t sustainable. It comes with great costs to your body, health, emotions, and relationships just to name a few.

It’s okay to take a break. It’s okay to soothe and nurture yourself.

I recently took a 5 week social media break. It helped me reconnect to my self, the important people in my life, healthy behaviours and self care practices that had fallen off. I was able to be more present and engaged in each moment and fully practice gratitude.

Check in and reflect on what you need. I encourage you to give yourself permission to take a break.

It’s okay to not be “cheerful and jolly” during the holidays. There are lots of reasons (more than just the ones listed) as to why you may feel sad, or other emotions, during the holidays.

That may feel exhausting and heavy to hold.

Take a deep breath. Allow yourself to feel what you’re feeling. Your emotions are valid.

If they become too much for you, reach out and ask for help. Whether that’s from a friend/family member or a professional like a social worker or a crisis number.
