Mary Ellen Pleasant, often called the “Mother of Civil Rights in California,” was raised by an adoptive family after escaping abuse and hardship as a child. This early support gave her the foundation to become a formidable entrepreneur, abolitionist, and activist.

Pleasant used her wealth and influence to fund the Underground Railroad, assist formerly enslaved people, and fight against racial injustice. She strategically leveraged her position to challenge discriminatory laws and empower Black communities in the 19th century.

George Washington Carver, the pioneering scientist, inventor, and educator, was born into slavery around 1864 in Diamond, Missouri. Orphaned as an infant, he was taken in and raised by Moses and Susan Carver, who became his adoptive parents. Despite their limited means, the Carvers encouraged George’s curiosity and love of learning, supporting his early experiments with plants and nature.

Carver went on to become a world-renowned agricultural scientist, developing innovative uses for peanuts, sweet potatoes, and other crops. His work not only transformed agriculture in the American South but also created opportunities for countless Black farmers and communities.

This Valentine’s Day, we celebrate the joy of new beginnings, especially the love that grows when a child joins your family. Every smile, hug, and laugh is the start of a beautiful story. 💌✨

Over the past week, we explored Gary Chapman’s Five Love Languages. From words of affirmation to acts of service, quality time, physical touch, and thoughtful gifts. Each language is a unique way to show care, build connection, and help every family member feel seen and loved.
