Today is World Social Work Day, and it also takes place during National Social Work Month - a time to recognize and celebrate the social work profession.

Across Canada, social workers show up every day to support individuals, families, and communities. They walk alongside people through some of the most difficult moments in their lives, advocate for access to resources and rights, and work to address the systemic barriers that affect health, safety, and wellbeing.

Social work is rooted in care, dignity, and a deep commitment to social justice. The profession plays an essential role in strengthening communities and creating pathways toward equity and inclusion.

The Canadian Association of Social Workers celebrates social workers across the country and the impact they make in the lives of people and communities every day.

Today, and throughout National Social Work Month, we honour the dedication, compassion, and leadership of social workers.

We hold heavy in our hearts today the death of Gunner Sebastian Halmagean during his service in Latvia.
Behind every uniform is an individual whose legacy will impact many. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends, fellow serving members and all who love and care for him as the pain of his death is immeasurable.

We are reminded that those who show up to preserve our freedoms do so with risk. Please care for one another and seek support as needed. Thank you for your service Gunner.

Gunner Sebastian Halmagean, a Canadian Armed Forces member deployed on Operation REASSURANCE in Latvia and who was employed by the Canadian-led NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia, died at Camp Labrie on Ceri Military base, on January 29, 2026.

The circumstances surrounding Gunner Halmagean’s death is currently under investigation by the Canadian Forces Military Police with support from Latvian State Police, and no further information will be provided. At this time, there is no indication this incident poses an increased threat to the safety and security of our deployed members.

Gunner Halmagean was originally from Hamilton, Ontario, and was posted to the 4th Artillery Regiment (General Support), Royal Canadian Artillery, part of 6 Canadian Combat Support Brigade, which is based at 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in Oromocto, New Brunswick.

Gunner Halmagean was deployed on Operation REASSURANCE as part of the Air Defence Battery within the Multinational Artillery Battalion Group at NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia. He had served in the Canadian Armed Forces for nearly three years. This was his first overseas deployment.

On Remembrance Day we pause to honour all who serve and have served. Thank you for your service.

For the families who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, and continue to feel the pain, know you are always in our thoughts. We wish you strength today and everyday, as you honour your loved ones.

Photo is Dr. Christina's father, Ret. Lieutenant (Navy) Joseph Schopf. We send special love to you today, Dad, for all the sacrifices you have made to serve our country. We are all proud of you.

In this season of change, we carve out time for thanks, gratitude, and soon, remembrance. Please consider taking a moment to reflect on this impactful song written and shared by Nicolas Stone, reminding us of those that serve community and country selflessly - but also the costs of caring in doing so. To all those that 'run' - Thank you ❤️ ~ Dr. Christina

Dr. Christina Mills of Social Work Solutions Canada in Hamilton, is attending her first Federation Meeting this weekend with the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, as the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW) representative nationally.

Christina is attending alongside the OASW, CEO - Ajirioghene Evi and OASW board president - Evelyn Weger.

The meeting is fortunate to be hosted by the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia in the Preston Townships (one area where African Nova Scotians were settled, as opposed to choosing to settle), as part of the CASW's commitment to anti-racism and reconciliation.

It was especially heartwarming for Christina to witness the new feature exhibit at the Centre, "Portraits" - Stories of Black Canadian Military Service.

A fallen soldier Christina holds a special place in her heart for, Mark Anthony Graham, is from Hamilton, and was prominently featured on a banner at the exhibit.

The CASW continues to drive the profession of Social Work forward nationally. Christina thanks everyone who made this valuable weekend a reality, and she looks forward to continuing to contribute to the dialogue to strengthen the social work profession through her Board memberships provincially and nationally.
