Do I Have to Get Undressed?

Short Answer: No
Long Answer: Depends

Did you know RMTs trained in Ontario are able to treat you with all, some or no clothes?

Reasons to remain clothed:
✳️ too painful to remove clothing
✳️ too sweaty
✳️ time limitations
✳️ movement based therapy requested
✳️ personal preference

It's advantageous to your therapist when you have less restrictive clothing but we can work in many scenarios to provide you relief

☢️ maybe just don't put toxic stuff in you? ☣️

season is here and wellness marketing has turned it up to 11 in case you forgot

the intentions are good but shortcuts to health don't often come through as advertised

anything that makes us change for the better I can get on board with

we might not make the best choices all the time but your body is well equipped to handle most of what we throw our way...

here are 5 organs that help prevent a full on biohazard from happening all year round:

:
remove wastes & extra fluid from your body.
remove acid (ammonia ➡ urea) that is produced by the cells of your body.
maintain a healthy balance of water, salts, and minerals - such as sodium, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium - in your blood.

Liver:
converts ammonia (waste product from processing proteins) into a substance called urea.
releases urea into the blood where the kidneys excrete it via the urine.
removes alcohol from the blood, as well as affects many medications a person takes.
stores vitamins A, D, E, K, B12.

Lungs:
mucus that coats your nose and lungs creates a second protective layer to catch and expel airborne invaders.
the lungs and bronchi help convert toxins into carbonic gas (CO2) which you then exhale.

Skin:
creates a barrier protecting us from bacteria, viruses, and chemical toxins.
through sweat, it can rid trace amounts of heavy metals, arsenic, lead, and mercury.

Spleen:
filters your blood and recognises old or damaged red blood cells; removes them from your body by breaking them down and saving any useful components, such as iron.
white blood cells in the spleen, called lymphocytes, munch up certain bacteria that have a coat around them and destroy them.

Honourable Mentions:

The Digestive System - eliminates solid waste coming in through the stomach.

The Lymphatic System - transports lymphocytes that help fight infections and protect against harmful toxins.

💀 22? 28? 29? 45? 💀

wait - did you think it was just one big bone?

babies have 45 individual bones at birth, many of which fuse together [ofssify] by age two

by adulthood, there are 29 individual bones in the skull region

skull = cranium (8) + facial bones (14)

cranial bones:
Frontal (1)
Parietal (2)
Temporal (2)
Occipital (1)
Ethmoid (1)
Sphenoid (1)

facial bones:
Zygomatic (2)
Lacrimal (2)
Nasal (2)
Inferior Nasal Conchae (2)
Palatine (2)
Maxilla (2)
Vomer (1)
Mandible (1)

🕵🏾‍♂️ that only brings us to 22 bones 🤔

some do not include the bones of the inner ear [ossicles] (which brings our count to 28) and then there's also free floating bone in the neck just above the voice box (29) as part of the skull region but they are there nonetheless

ossicles:
Middle Ear Malleus (2)
Incus (2)
Stapes (2) [smallest bone in the body]

Hyoid (1) [aids in swallowing]

take that break you keep saying you need 🧘🏽‍♀️

we got hand hygiene down - let's focus on

this can be a difficult time of year (in non-pandemic years) and we're all managing much differently

some of us are thriving, others are hanging by a thread

kids home from school, roads and malls busy, impending doom from social media, family coming from out of town, last minute everything, rushing to get everything done for the weekend....

remember to breathe

try it now:
sit up straight. close your eyes. breathe slowly.
🌬 repeat.

is just one of the proactive things you can do to help yourself to be more centered, calm and refreshed

here's some ideas to improve your mental health this holiday:

🧠 be active; exercise
🧠 eat well and drink responsibly
🧠 do something you're good at
🧠 take breaks
🧠 talk about your feelings / ask for help

🖥️ Mo Monitors Mo Problems 🖥

is on the up and up while and function suffer

is it worth it? (to you - not your employer)

multiple monitor setups have become normalized and widespread over the past few years

⬅️ screen on the left
➡️ screen on the right
⬇️ laptop down low

in time it became evident that this workspace had patients staring at one screen more than others

this may contribute to:
⚡waking up with a pain in your neck
🤕 tension headaches
🙃 your neck often bent to that side

if you can't have a posture-centered work environment it's advised that you:

⌚ take regular breaks
💆🏾‍♀️ do neck stretches during working hours
💦 drink plenty of water
💃🏽 engage in a full body exercise routine

see a massage therapist or your preferred alternative healthcare provider for a treatment and more information

🌱 (a plant that is in your home) 🌱

saw this on a collection of life hacks and had to share...

most of us talk to ourselves: either out loud or using our inner voice

the things we repeat in our head matter

living in a world where the majority of the marketing makes us feel inadequate: not pretty enough, not manly enough, not cool enough and simply just not enough to feel normal - can take a mental toll

I often envy those remote tribes who are disconnected from modern society and our "luxuries"

be nice to yourself today 😁

you're the only person who knows how amazing you are

got that pain going down your shoulder blade?

could be a good pinched nerve ⚡
could be a trigger point 🎯

could be both 😬

identifying and describing your pain is vital for your assessment and treatment

nerve pain is usually very specific and different than other pains we have experienced

if a nerve is compressed, the body has a few ways of letting us know that we should probably take a closer look under the hood...

signs of nerve involvement:
⚡ pain extending down the arm or leg
⚡ weakness in the hand, arm, foot, leg
⚡ numbness
⚡ tingling (pins and needles)
⚡ pain that changes with movement

our nervous system controls interacts with our environment to relay information to the brain about our internal and external surroundings

when that communication breaks down, we won't feel normal until its addressed

speak to your preferred body mechanic if you think you have a pinched nerve!

the most badass thing you can do is know when to ask for help 💪🏻

cold, excited, threatened or that song comes on 🤤
⬆️ ⬆️ ⬆️ ⬆️

these moments can cause goosebumps, goose flesh or goose pimples (🇬🇧) to appear on our skin

medically known as cutis anserine
[cutis means skin & anser means goose]

they represent one of your body's primitive, automatic defense responses

the muscle fiber [ᴀʀʀᴇᴄᴛᴏʀ ᴘɪʟɪ] connected to a hair follicle contracts ➡️ the skin surrounding the follicle puckers, pulling our hair straight up

we share this response with all mammals to:

🔥 generate warmth by trapping escaping body heat
🐆 increasing the perceived size of an animal

🎶 this phenomenon while listening to music is called 𝙛𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙤𝙣 [meaning shiver in 🇫🇷] commonly known as 🅣🅗🅔 🅒🅗🅘🅛🅛🅢 and can be accompanied by dilated pupils 🥺

w o w 🤯

so very grateful to even be nominated, let alone win something in the for

a huge shoutout to all my patients from that I have had the opportunity to treat and meet over the years!

thank you for voting! it feels so nice to be recognized for something that I truly enjoy doing

really hope this doesn't come across as a humble brag - something that is (unfortunately) normalized on social media today

therapists are useless without patients to fix and I want to acknowledge that without your votes, this post doesn't happen

... except from Thanksgiving to NYE

do you know where your stomach even is?

it's not where you grab when declaring "get in ma belly!"
those are your intestines

(your stomach is closer to your ribcage and slightly more on the right side)

here's some more food for thought: 🥁

🍲 your stomach is the first line of defense against food borne Illness
🍱 the majority of digestion happens in your small intestine - the stomach primarily holds a mechanical role
🍝 you can survive without a stomach
🍜 your stomach produces hydrochloric acid which can eat through metal and bone
🥘 you produce mucus in your stomach lining that is resistant to the acid...
🥙... but not that resistant as you have a new lining every 2 weeks
🥗 the sound of your stomach rumbling is caused by involuntary muscular contractions and called peristalsis - it becomes more audible when you are horizontal or empty

bon appetit!

🙄 that's how eyeroll

after reading this, you can clearly see how cool your eyes are 😎

did you know that the human eye...

👁️ is the 2nd most complex organ (🧠🥇)
👁️ can distinguish 10 million colours
👁️ is only 1/6th visible (83% hidden)
👁️ has the fastest contracting muscle in the body
👁️ cannot be opened while sneezing 🤧
👁️ blinks 12x per minute on average
👁️ is made of the same type of cells as your brain

🤓 BONUS:

👀 80% of learning happens visually and 43% of children with vision problems can pass a basic eye test

👀 20/20 vision = normal vision
you can see clearly at 20 feet away

👀 20/200 vision = legally blind
you see clearly at 20 feet where someone with perfect vision can see that at 200 feet

👄 your mouth is gross 🦠 go floss 💦

World Population: 7.9 billion (October 2021)
Mouth Bacteria Population: > 7.9 billion (Now)

were you aware that there are more cells that are not you, than are you, in your body?

we live in (relative) harmony with bacteria (over 700 species of bacteria in our mouth alone!)

when kept in balance, they help digest food, absorb nutrients from food, and make essential vitamins in our digestive tract

mouth bacteria are also helpful but can be harmful with inconsistent oral care

mouth hygiene can affect the rest of your body:

🦠 bad bacteria can cause gum disease
🦠 the body attempts to fight it with inflammation
🦠 other pathogens get into the bloodstream

𝗯𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵 and 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀 after meals. that's it.

we've heard it since we were kids but sometimes you're just too tired

speak with your dental hygienist or dentist for all your mouth bacteria needs 😁
