COPE: A Student Mental Health Initiative

COPE: A Student Mental Health Initiative COPE is a student organization dedicated to alleviating mental health stigma by raising awareness, as well as providing education and referrals.

COPE is a student organization at McMaster University dedicated to stomping out the stigma associated with mental health. It was founded in September 2008 by a group of students looking to make a difference. What started from humble beginnings is now one of the most active clubs at McMaster with plenty of opportunities for members to get involved with mental health issues on campus and in the community. We believe that reducing mental health stigma, those with mental illness will feel more comfortable speaking about their experiences and seeking help. By normalizing mental health and emphasizing its importance, we can all help improve access to mental health services and the services themselves. Thus, COPE aims to reduce stigma by:

1) Raising awareness
2) Educating the community
3) Providing appropriate referrals

Caterina: “Alright what is going on everyone, welcome, welcome welcome to cope’s very first podcast, cope IRL. Where we will be having conversations that you wouldn’t typically have in a classroom setting or university classroom setting. For those of you who are new here, or new to cope, cope is a McMaster club and we basically aim for mental health advocacy and we just want to connect McMaster students together. On the basis of that, we are all students and all go through similar struggles, a lot are unique and similar between the two. We want to connect everyone and promote positive well being, and that is why we are here!”
