My heart is heavy as I join our community in grieving the tragic loss of three JDSS students in yesterday’s car crash. This loss is unimaginable, and its impact reaches far beyond the school. Touching classmates, teachers, friends, families, and so many in Hanover who are hurting right now.

As a therapist, parent and community member, I want to acknowledge how deeply something like this can shake us. Grief after a sudden loss can bring so many emotions; sadness, disbelief, anger, guilt, even numbness. There is no right or wrong way to feel.

If you’re struggling to make sense of it, please reach out, to friends, family, teachers, counsellors, or anyone you trust. Connection is what helps us carry the weight of heartbreak.

🧡 Orange Shirt Day Every Child Matters 🧡

Today, on Orange Shirt Day, we remember and honour the Indigenous children who were taken from their families and communities and forced into residential schools. We acknowledge the pain, loss, and intergenerational trauma that continues to be felt, and we stand in solidarity with survivors, families, and communities.

As therapists, we also recognize the importance of creating safe spaces where stories can be shared, grief can be held, and healing can take root.

Every child matters. Every voice matters. Every life matters.

Let us take today not only to remember, but also to commit to listening, learning, and walking alongside Indigenous peoples in truth and reconciliation. 🧡

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Miley Cyrus opened up about her journey with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy, stating, "Love it, saved my life."

She described the experience as "like watching a movie in your mind," allowing her to process deep-seated emotions and overcome performance anxiety.

As a certified EMDR therapist, I’ve witnessed firsthand how this approach can help individuals reprocess traumatic memories and find healing.

If you're curious about how EMDR can support your mental health journey, feel free to reach out.

In times like these, it's more important than ever to come together with compassion and care.

Please be gentle with yourselves and with each other.

Today, we pause to honor and remember the countless Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people who have been taken from their families and communities due to violence, neglect, and systemic injustice. May 5 is a National Day of Awareness for MMIWG—a time to raise our voices against the ongoing crisis and to stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities calling for truth, justice, and change.

This is not just a moment for reflection but a call to action. The trauma of loss and invisibility reverberates through generations, and it is our collective responsibility to listen, learn, and advocate for safety, equity, and healing.

As a therapist, I hold space for the grief, resilience, and strength of those impacted—and I remain committed to trauma-informed, culturally respectful care.

Let us wear red today and every day we remember—to bear witness, to say their names, and to refuse to look away.

🌍💙 World Autism Awareness Day 💙🌍

Today, we celebrate and honor the diverse minds and experiences of autistic individuals. Autism isn’t something to "fix"—it’s a unique way of experiencing the world. As a neurodivergent-affirming therapist, I strive to create a space where autistic clients feel truly seen, heard, and valued.

Instead of just awareness, let’s focus on acceptance, understanding, and advocacy—ensuring autistic voices lead the conversation.

💙 Embrace differences.
💙 Challenge misconceptions.
💙 Support autistic individuals in ways that respect their needs.

As we observe Black History Month, we take a moment to recognize the incredible contributions of Black individuals to our culture, communities, and history. This month is not only about reflection but also about acknowledging the ongoing journey toward healing, justice, and empowerment.

In the work I do as a psychotherapist, I recognize and am continuing to learn the unique mental health challenges that come with the experience of being Black in Canada, including the effects of systemic racism, historical trauma, and social inequities. It’s important to create space for these experiences, to provide a safe environment where healing can take place, and to honour the resilience that so many Black individuals have shown through generations.

This month, let’s honour the legacy of those who have fought for freedom, equality, and mental health awareness. I encourage all of us to reflect on how we can continue to support and uplift Black voices and ensure access to mental health resources for everyone in our community.
