🚨 DRUG ALERT – EDMONTON & SURROUNDING AREAS 🚨
Highly Potent Tranquilizer Detected in Fentanyl Supply
Several samples of what was expected to be fentanyl (“down”) in Edmonton have been confirmed to contain medetomidine, a highly potent non-opioid tranquilizer.
⚠️ Important to know:
• Medetomidine can cause profound sedation, very slow heart rate, low blood pressure, and delirium or hallucinations
• It is estimated to be up to 200x more potent than xylazine
• Naloxone (Narcan®) does NOT reverse medetomidine, but should still be given because fentanyl is often present
• Mixing with other depressants (opioids, benzodiazepines, alcohol) greatly increases overdose risk
• Withdrawal can be severe and may require hospital or ICU care
🛑 Harm Reduction Tips:
✔ Use with others or at a Supervised Consumption / Overdose Prevention Site
✔ Start with a small amount and go slow
✔ Always carry naloxone (Narcan®)
✔ Consider drug checking before use
✔ If using alone, consider NORS (1-888-688-NORS) for remote overdose monitoring
Speak to your local pharmacy about how to get and used Naloxone.
