On March 21st, we celebrate the vibrant worldwide Down syndrome community and highlight ways we can better support the community. This year's theme is “Together Against Loneliness,” a call for meaningful inclusion and connection.

Join us in celebrating belonging, identity, and community at our World Down Syndrome Day Dance and find more ways to celebrate WDSD in the Vancouver area at DSRF.org/WDSD.

Telling a child to “be grateful” is a thinking task.

But gratitude is actually a felt experience.

If a child is: – overwhelmed
– dysregulated
– stuck in big emotions

Their brain isn’t in a state where gratitude is accessible.

So instead of asking for gratitude, try this:

Shift the question from

“What are you grateful for?”

to something more concrete like:
“What felt a tiny bit good today?”

or

“What didn’t feel as hard as yesterday?”

This helps their brain:
• scan for safety
• notice small positives
• build emotional awareness

Gratitude isn’t a demand.
It’s a skill that develops with the right support.

💕 Childhood memories usually aren’t about the big things. They’re about the feeling of growing up with you.

Years from now, children won’t remember whether the house was perfect or every moment went smoothly. What often stays with them are the emotional experiences that shaped their sense of safety and belonging.

-> Did I feel safe?
-> Did someone listen to me?
-> Was I comforted when I was overwhelmed?
-> Did we laugh and play together?

Children build their understanding of the world through everyday moments — how we respond when they struggle and how they felt in our presence.

✨ It’s not perfection that shapes childhood memories. It’s connection and the feeling of home.

Children don’t just listen to what we say — they absorb what we carry.

Our stress, our healing, our unresolved pain, our capacity for joy… it all becomes the water they swim in.

When we tend to our own nervous systems, seek support, and do our inner work, we aren’t being selfish — we’re clarifying the water for the next generation.

Healing is generational. So is unhealed pain. 💛
