Such a beautiful reminder about the diversity and expansive meaning of family...

Family isn’t always the people you were born into.
Sometimes it’s the people who choose you
when you are at your weakest,
when your voice shakes,
when your eyes carry more pain than words ever could.

It’s the one who notices you’re hurting
before you ask for help.
The one who sits down beside you on the floor
instead of telling you to stand up and be strong.
The one who doesn’t rush your healing
or judge your tears.

Family is the hand that reaches for yours
when the world feels too heavy to face alone.
The quiet presence that says,
“I’m here,”
without needing explanations or promises.

Blood can connect bodies,
but love connects souls.
And not everyone who shares your blood
will show up when it matters most.
But some people—
the rare ones—
will hold your hand through the dark
and never let go,
even when they don’t fully understand your pain.

Those people become your family.
Not by name,
not by obligation,
but by choice.

They stay when others leave.
They soften your hardest days.
They remind you that you are not alone,
even when everything inside you feels broken.

And if you’ve found someone like that—
someone who holds your hand
when you need it the most—
hold onto them.
Because that kind of love
isn’t common.
It’s home. 🤍

On this Valentine’s Day, let's turn our attention inward and focus on self-love first!

We always hear “treat others the way you want to be treated”; the same goes for our relationships with ourselves! We must treat ourselves with kindness first, and that love will then radiate outward to all those around us.

Self-love lays the foundation for emotional wellness, healthy relationships, healthy communication patterns, and a sense of self-confidence. Today (and every day), may you speak to yourself with kindness, listen to what your body is asking of you and know that your existence is important.

Sheila Linseman MA, RP, has been with CHATT for 6 years and is presenting our upcoming Wellness Wednesday!! Please join Sheila Linseman February 18th from 7pm-8pm at 90 Samnah Cres. to gain tools and resources to help manage seasonal lows this time of year. Sheila specializes in complex mental health, mood disorders, depression, anxiety, grief and much more. Sheila Linseman has worked in vocation, education, institutions, community social services, has a background in psychometry and works with youth and adults. Sheila Linseman brings a collaborative lens to her work and offers CBT, DBT, trauma informed practices and compassion-focused techniques. She is a fabulous resource to our amazing community.
