We 💯 should NOT *force* toddlers to learn their letters and numbers when they aren’t interested - just like we should NOT *stop* kids from learning letters and numbers if they are interested.

Play can look a lot of ways and all play is valid - it’s also developmentally appropriate for toddlers 🎉

Many children begin talking within the expected time frame but then struggle maintaining the expected rate of language acquisition. These kids often miss out on early intervention because they are talking, so it's not as clear that they are behind. This chart is just about vocabulary, so please know there is SO much more to language development!

It’s also important to know this is the average amount of words- not the minimum amount. There is a wide range of what is considered typical, but I think a major key here is the very quick increase in vocabulary words in a relatively short time frame.

“I've noticed specialised interests are called obsessions by many parents to [autistic children].

Please try and think of it as specialised.

If a neurotypical was interested in something and could tell you everything about it, they wouldn't be called obsessed, why should we?

We are passionate, involved and informed, not obsessed.

Many of us grow up to be experts in our chosen field, eg a 'Neurological Specialist' would not be called 'Neurological Obsessive'.

Just a thought.”

Having raised two neurodivergent children, this is so true. And the fight never ends.
