Kamloops Therapeutic Riding Association

Kamloops Therapeutic Riding Association KTRA offers therapeutic riding for children and adults with a wide range of disabilities. https://boogiethebridge.com/volunteer/

KTRA's riding lessons benefits the riders by using the motivating medium of horse care and riding we draw an individual’s attention to their strengths, successes and most importantly build self-esteem. Through horse care and riding we will teach those social and behavior skills necessary to function and succeed in a social world. It is these skills that are vital to self-esteem and ultimately determine the place a person fills in this society.

Happy National Volunteer Week!

We want to take a moment to sincerely thank each of you who gives your time, energy, and heart to Kamloops Therapeutic Riding Association. Your support makes it possible for our riders to learn, grow, and experience the joy of working with horses in a safe and encouraging environment.

Whether you’re leading horses, side-walking, helping behind the scenes, or simply showing up with a positive attitude—please know that what you do truly matters. We couldn’t do this without you.

Thank you for being such an important part of our community 💛

Tuesday - April 21, 2026

There is currently a police situation happening on Shuswap Rd between River Vista Dr and just
past our barn. No one can get to the barn.

We don’t have any more information on what is happening or how long it will take so we have decided to cancel the rest of today’s lessons.

At KTRA, we are so incredibly grateful for Kathy and the care she provides to our horses. 💛

Her dedication, knowledge, and gentle approach make such a difference in the wellbeing of each and every horse in our program. Our horses give so much to our riders—and thanks to Kathy, they are able to feel their very best while doing it.

It takes a special person to understand and support these incredible animals the way she does. We truly appreciate the time, effort, and heart she brings to KTRA.

Thank you, Kathy, for being such an important part of our team and for helping our horses continue to change lives every day. 🐴✨ 🐴✨

From paintbrushes to power tools 🎨🔧

Life around the barn isn’t just about horses — it’s about learning to do a little bit of everything. Whether it’s painting a fence or using a drill to fix what’s broken, every job builds confidence and real-world skills.

✨ Hands-on problem solving
✨ Independence
✨ Attention to detail
✨ Responsibility
✨ Confidence with tools

These moments might seem small, but they’re shaping strong, capable individuals ready for whatever comes next.

Not just barn work… life work.

This week in our therapeutic riding lessons, we introduced working with the gate—and it was amazing to see how versatile this simple tool can be for riders of all levels! 🐴✨

For some riders, the gate became a great way to practice more advanced skills like turn on the forehand and leg yield, focusing on control, coordination, and clear communication with their horse.

For others, it offered meaningful opportunities to build foundational skills, including walk/halt transitions, steering, and even picking up and placing rings—all while developing confidence and independence.

The beauty of incorporating the gate is how easily it can be adapted to meet each rider where they’re at, creating both challenge and success in every lesson. So proud of all our riders for their hard work this week! 💚
