How can we best do this?

1. Consume a low-refined carbohydrate, higher-fat, high-fiber, phytonutrient-rich diet.

2. Exercise. Build muscle and optimize your VO2 max.

3. Supplement with magnesium, chromium, biotin, vitamin D, and omega-3 fats, which all support optimal glucose control.

4. Talk to your practitioner about adding alpha-lipoic acid, and berberine.

5. Address causes of inflammation, including dysbiosis and environmental toxins.

6. Use a continuous glucose monitor to track your response to food. Try Health to track your blood sugar and progress (levelshealth.com/hyman).

Now something I found over the years that’s really fascinating to me, is that we don't connect how we feel with what we eat or how much we rest or sleep, how much we exercise, or how much time we spend with friends, or how much bad news and media we’re exposed to.

I had a patient who said, "Geez, doctor, I'm so tired. I don't know what to do. I'm always tired. My brain's not working." I said, "Well, how much do you sleep at night?" He goes, "Well, five or six hours." And I'm like, "Well, get eight hours of sleep and try and see what happens." So, we really don't connect the dots.

Now, once we make those connections, we can start to change those simple habits that can have profound effects on our health long term.

Feeling fully focused, energized, and having great brain health requires really following the two simple principles of functional medicine: taking out the bad stuff and putting in the good stuff. Taking out the bad food, toxins, allergens, micro-stress, etc. Then adding in the good stuff like the right food, nutrients, light, air, water, sleep, relaxation, connection, meaning, love, and purpose.

One in three children born today will develop type 2 diabetes and four out of ten will be overweight. There’s a fundamental problem happening around our country when it comes to how we feed our kids and the lifelong health risks they face as a result.

When we think about fixing the problem, it makes sense to look at our schools.

In Boston, for example, 30,000 children a day rely on the school food system for 2 to 3 meals a day. That gives the educational system a lot of power to change the nutritional profile of our children’s diets with real food, but unfortunately, many districts are stuck relying on packaged and processed options.

Certain groups are making some amazing positive changes, though, by installing real school kitchens that serve real food.

A few other ways we can incorporate education about nutrition are:

Help reinvent school lunch programs.

Support schools as safe zones where access is only to foods that promote health and optimal brain functioning.

Support changes in zoning laws, which prevent fast food and junk food outlets from operating next to schools.
Build school gardens to teach children about the origins of food and let them experience the sensory delight of real, garden-fresh fruits and vegetables.

Support the integration of self-care and nutrition curriculum into schools.

Bring back basic cooking skills to schools as part of a curriculum – including essential life tools.
