As a therapist, I often work with parents who feel overwhelmed and stressed by the challenges of raising children. It's completely normal to feel this way, but it's important to remember the value of being a calm parent, you are the emotional regulator for your child. I encourage you to take a step back, breathe, and remember that you are doing the best you can.
Here are a few tips that I hope will help you on your parenting journey:
1. Beginning to lose your cool, or feeling overwhelmed by anxiety? Focus on your breath, breathe in 4, out for 5, in 5 out for 6, in 6 out for 7. Notice any sounds, smells and sights. This can help you feel more grounded and entered, even in the midst of chaos.
2. Name it to tame it. Name what it is your feeling, and the impact that feeling is having on you. By naming what we are feeling, we reduce the intensity of the emotion, helping us feel less overwhelmed.
3. Prioritise. Recognise what’s more important. Does the kitchen need cleaning or can it wait whilst you soothe your little one? You’re only human with limited resources, do what you can, the rest can wait.
4. Empathise. Keep calm with the kids by viewing the world through their eyes. Understand what it is they are needing in that moment. Crying, whining, shouting, tantrum’s are all forms of communication which are likely seeking your help and reassurance. When we can hold that sense of calm for them, they will learn to do it for themselves.
Remember, no parent is perfect, and it's always okay to make mistakes. But by cultivating a sense of calm, you'll be better equipped to navigate the challenges and enjoy the precious moments of parenthood.
