Visit my web page at specialdeliverydoula.ca The word "doula" comes from the Greek language meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a women who provides excellent physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth. Studies have proven that women who have doulas attend births have shorter labors with fewer complications, and babies are less likely to spend time in the nursery. A Doula·

Research shows that having a doula help after the birth for the first few weeks can ease the transition that comes with the addition of a baby to a family, and reduces the risk of postpartum depression. Doulas can:

While doulas can seem expensive and require a financial investment, when we market ourselves as a luxury, we overlook our immense benefit. Sure, it sounds luxurious to have extra support. However, given how important birth is and the climate of modern maternity care, doulas are invaluable.

As doulas, we provide invaluable:

Emotional support
Physical Support
Education
Support in informed decision making.
Evidence-based support
Prenatal and postpartum support
Practical support
And more! Research shows that continuous labor support, like that of a professional doula, reduces the risk of c-section and other interventions. Continuous labor support increases the likelihood of a positive birth experience as well.

We cannot promise specific birth scenarios and outcomes. However, we can promise continuous, empowering support to help clients feel cared for regardless of how birth unfolds.

Great info!

If you’re expecting a baby (or supporting someone who is), the words “effacement” and “dilation” get thrown around a lot—often without much explanation. This visual breaks it down in a simple, powerful way. 🤍

Effacement is about how thin the cervix becomes (measured in percentages), and dilation is about how open it becomes (measured in centimeters). Both are part of the incredible process your body goes through to prepare for birth—but here’s the part many people don’t realize: they don’t always happen at the same time, and they don’t follow a strict timeline.

You might be 30% effaced and not dilated at all… or fully effaced but only a little dilated. Some people dilate quickly at the very end; others progress slowly over days. None of this means your body is “behind.” It means your body is doing things in its own rhythm.

For families in high-resource healthcare systems, it’s easy to get caught up in numbers and milestones. But labor isn’t a race—it’s a physiological journey. What matters most is how you feel, how contractions are progressing, how baby is tolerating labor, and how supported you are by your care team.

So if you’ve been told, “You’re only 2 cm dilated,” take a breath. Many labors go from early stages to active labor faster than expected. Preparation, patience, and trust in your body (along with good medical support) can make a world of difference. 🌿

Knowledge like this helps replace fear with understanding—and understanding is a powerful form of calm.

During birth, a woman’s body can experience pain up to 57 units that’s the same as breaking 20 bones at once. 😳

And she still apologizes for yelling, worries about how she looks, and thanks everyone afterward.

Women don’t “give birth.”

They survive it.
They conquer it.
They become someone else because of it. ❤️

They call it the 4th trimester for a reason…

Because just like your baby is adjusting to life outside the womb, your body, hormones, and identity are adjusting too.
It’s a season of deep healing. But it often gets overlooked.
