From May 4 to 10, we observe Mental Health Week.🌸

This year’s theme invites us to look beyond the surface, recognizing that many people carry struggles that aren’t always visible.

It’s easy to assume we know how someone is doing based on what we see. But stress, anxiety, burnout, and loneliness can exist behind even the busiest schedules or brightest smiles. Taking a moment to check in—with ourselves and with each other—can make a meaningful difference.

At Sandstone Psychotherapy and Counselling, we offer a safe, supportive space to talk—whether you’re feeling overwhelmed or just need someone to listen.

If you’ve been thinking about support, this could be your moment. We’re here when you’re ready.💛

Your 20s are not a dress rehearsal for the part of life that matters. They are part of the life that matters. Make mistakes. Call people back. Show up early sometimes. Ask questions that feel dumb. Let yourself be changed by what you learn.

The world does not need you to be perfect. It needs you to be willing to grow, willing to try, and willing to care about something bigger than your comfort. You have more to offer than the critics suggest and more to learn than you realize, and both of those things can be true at the same time.

Go build something. We're glad you're here.

What happens in therapy? Every person’s experience is unique, so there’s no single answer. In broad terms, a session is a safe, confidential space where you can talk about what’s on your mind, your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

A therapist will listen, ask questions, and help you notice patterns, explore solutions, and develop tools to cope with challenges. Some sessions are more reflective, some more skills-focused, and some simply give you space to be heard. The pace and focus are guided by your needs, not a set formula.

Feel free to reach out for a free consultation or to our email hello@sandstonecounselling.com if you have any more questions about therapy.💛

As the days get longer and flowers start to bloom, it’s the perfect time to step outside and soak in the benefits of nature.🌸 Studies show that spending time outdoors can:

Reduce stress & anxiety – Nature helps lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and promotes relaxation.
Boost mood & energy – Exposure to sunlight increases serotonin, a key hormone for happiness.
Improve focus & creativity – A walk in nature can refresh your mind and spark new ideas.
Encourage mindfulness – Tuning into the sights, sounds, and scents of spring keeps you present in the moment.

Spring Challenge: Step Outside for 10 Minutes Today!
Take a moment to breathe in the fresh air, listen to the birds, or feel the warmth of the sun on your skin. Even a short walk can do wonders for your well-being.💛

Sometimes the thoughts that feel the loudest aren’t the ones telling the full truth. Our minds try to protect us, but sometimes they jump to conclusions, assume the worst, or fill in blanks with stories that aren’t really there.

Noticing these unhelpful thinking patterns isn’t about criticizing yourself. It’s about gently creating space between you and the thoughts your mind is offering.

And in that space, something powerful can happen: awareness, clarity, and the possibility for change. ✨

Do you ever feel like you've been holding onto something for so long, even though you know it's not good for you? Don't worry, it's biological! We need to learn how to let go of what is no longer serving us so we can open ourselves to new possibilities and inner strength. As Ajahn Chah wisely said, ""If you let go a little, you find peace. If you let go a lot, you will find a lot of peace. If you let go absolutely, you find absolute peace and tranquillity. Embrace the art of letting go and embrace the freedom it brings! Here's how!

Worried about daylight savings getting you all mixed up?🥱

Here are some tips for adjusting to new sleep patterns and dealing with fatigue:
⏰Create a calming bedtime routine: Listen to calming music, dim the lights, take a bath, do nighttime yoga, and avoid screentime for at least an hour before bed.
⏰Optimize your sleep environment: Keep your room cool, dark and quiet.
⏰Manage light exposure: Get daylight in the morning and avoid bright lights in the evening to regulate your circadian rhythm.
⏰Exercise: Engage in physical activity most days of the week, but avoid strenuous workouts close to bedtime.

If you're feeling extra sleepy when the time shift hits, just do your best—you're not alone! We're right there with you.🤝

Our newest blog post is live 💛

Our counselling team launched a blog on the website website—a space where we’ll share therapist-informed insights, practical mental health tools, and gentle reflections to support your wellbeing.

Our second post is now live and explores understanding depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder.

"This is the time of year when we hear a lot of talk about the winter blues, sadness, and depression. While it’s common to feel down or sad from time to time, sometimes the sadness begins to intensify and doesn’t seem to lift the way we thought it would."
