Hazeldean Family Chiropractic is a family wellness chiropractic practice located in Kanata South. We use this page to explain to Kanata-area residents what a chiropractor can do—and what a chiropractor doesn’t do. We regularly see people with back pain, sciatica, neck pain, headaches, migraines, and many other symptoms. Our Chiropractors are registered members in good standing with the College of Chiropractors of Ontario. Meet Dr. Erin McLaughlin
“Growing up, I didn’t even know what a chiropractor was,” remembers Dr. Erin McLaughlin. “My first experience with one was during a summer job after finishing high school. I worked as an administrative assistant in a wellness-oriented clinic, and became a chiropractic patient following a recommendation from a fellow employee. I had no idea that I was about to experience major changes in my health!
“After several months of chiropractic adjustments, I noticed my breathing was starting to improve. I had been completely dependent on inhalers for many years prior, and wasn’t sure I really believed that my body could actually get better on its own. Sure enough, after about two years, I no longer needed any puffers and that was a great feeling! It was about that time I realized that chiropractic was what I wanted to do with my life. If I could have such a dramatic change in my own health, I wanted to learn how I could help other people do the same.”

Meet Dr. Pierre Paradis
"I received my first chiropractic adjustment when I was 14 years old. I was playing contact hockey at that time and a body check during a game caused a great deal of pain in my back. As a result, my parents, who themselves were receiving chiropractic care, decided to bring me to their chiropractor, Dr. Kenneth DeHaas. I’ve always had an interest in health sciences, but ever since my first adjustment, I was drawn to the chiropractic profession. Dr. DeHaas was great; not only as a chiropractor, but also in guiding me in my decision to become a chiropractor.

💧Did you know that the Ottawa River, water source for both the Britannia and Lemieux Water Purification Plants, is the greatest tributary of the St. Lawrence River and the second longest Canadian river flowing 1,271 kilometres.

💧The process of turning water into safe drinking water requires sophisticated processes, infrastructure, facilities, and chemical and electrical costs required to deliver this valuable product to homes all over the City of Ottawa. (https://ottawa.ca/en/living-ottawa)

💧Wellness tip: Drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily. Proper hydration supports spinal disc health and helps your body heal faster!

The Kanata Santa Clause Parade is taking place this Saturday, November 22. If you heading out to the parade, keep warm.
The KEY to LOVING WINTER starts with clothing and layers:
Long underwear – lots of great new technical materials and fun colours out there
Mitts with a wind resistant outer layer instead of gloves
Neck warmers instead of a scarf
Buffs are awesome for additional face protection
Hats – get a selection, cover your ears, add more than one (double hatting works well when the thermometer really drops!)
Snow pants – not just for kids
A jacket made for an Ottawa winter
Good boots – your feet will be cold unless you move those boots!
Gift ideas for all budgets – hand warmers, head lamps, reflective vest for visibility walking outside after work, heated jackets.

The Kanata Santa Claus parade is back again for 2025! We’re excited to announce that the parade will take place on November 22nd this year!

Thank you to the Hazeldean Mall Hazeldean Mall for returning as a title sponsor once again, and to Allan Hubley - Councillor for Kanata South , and Kanata North City Councillor Cathy Curry for their continued support.

We’re happy to be partnering once again with the Kanata Food Cupboard .

Stay tuned for more details!

Mobility as a Marker of Independence:

Active aging depends on maintaining flexibility, balance, and muscle strength. When the spine becomes stiff or painful, independence can gradually diminish, making it harder to take part in meaningful community traditions.

Gentle chiropractic care supports better mobility by easing tension, improving joint motion, and promoting overall body alignment.

In combination with personalized stretching and strengthening routines, it helps preserve both physical comfort and confidence.

Are you ready for a high-intensity workout? Because that's what snow shovelling is.
❄️Pick the right shovel: An ergonomic shovel with a curved handle and an adjustable handle length can minimize how much bending you need to do and ease the strain on both your knees and lower back.
❄️Warm up … thoroughly: Just like you would at the gym, with some dynamic stretching, jumping jacks – any of those fun things that get the blood pumping. Because cold, stiff muscles are much more prone to injury.
❄️Hydrate: It’s just as important in the winter as it is in the summer. Well-hydrated muscles are also less prone to injury.
❄️Dress properly: Wear good boots and dress in layers so you can strip down as the exertion makes you sweaty.
❄️Listen to your body: If you are gasping, having chest pains, seeing stars, or have a black haze encroaching on your vision, stop. If the symptoms persist or get worse, call 911. These are not the only warning signs to watch for – refer to the Heart and Stroke Foundation for more on heart attack symptoms.
❄️Stretch again: Just like at the gym, don’t leave worn muscles to tighten up into knots – do some post-workout stretching.
❄️And do go to the gym: Nothing prepares you better for these challenging chores around the house than hitting the gym on a regular basis. Regular exercise is what keeps us capable of handling all that life dishes out without ending up bedridden in pain, or worse, at the ER.

Today is National Saxophone Day commemorating the birth of the woodwind's inventor, Adolphe Sax.

Depending on the instrument, musicians can engage nearly every part of their body when they play. The violinist tucks in their chin to pull the bow across the strings. The drummer rhythmically taps his foot to activate the kick pedal for his bass drum.

While being repeatedly placed in these positions, subluxations can occur, causing nerve impingement and eventual pain.

Do you know or have a musician in your life who has been fighting pain while trying to play?

Encourage them to contact the clinic today for an appointment, and set them back on the path to making beautiful music!

🏒The Ottawa67's start today at TD Place Arena at Lansdowne. We all know that hockey is largely recognized as Canada’s national sport, and plenty of our patients, from the very young to grandparents, love to strap on the skates.
🏒You may not be able to control the game, but you can ensure that your head is protected. That means not just donning a helmet, but wearing it correctly — with a fully tightened chinstrap. We know that slack chinstraps offer greater accessibility, but it also drastically reduces the effectiveness of your helmet during a hit. Tighten up.

Heading out to see Sarah McLachlan today in Kanata at the Canadian Tire Centre? Concerts can be a lot of fun but not if you are experiencing lower back pain or knee pain.
Lower back pain and leg pain often occur simultaneously due to a common underlying cause – nerve compression or irritation in the lumbar spine.
Conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or degenerative disc disease can lead to pressure on the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down to the legs.
