Hazeldean Family Chiropractic is a family wellness chiropractic practice located in Kanata South. We use this page to explain to Kanata-area residents what a chiropractor can do—and what a chiropractor doesn’t do. We regularly see people with back pain, sciatica, neck pain, headaches, migraines, and many other symptoms. Our Chiropractors are registered members in good standing with the College of Chiropractors of Ontario. Meet Dr. Erin McLaughlin
“Growing up, I didn’t even know what a chiropractor was,” remembers Dr. Erin McLaughlin. “My first experience with one was during a summer job after finishing high school. I worked as an administrative assistant in a wellness-oriented clinic, and became a chiropractic patient following a recommendation from a fellow employee. I had no idea that I was about to experience major changes in my health!
“After several months of chiropractic adjustments, I noticed my breathing was starting to improve. I had been completely dependent on inhalers for many years prior, and wasn’t sure I really believed that my body could actually get better on its own. Sure enough, after about two years, I no longer needed any puffers and that was a great feeling! It was about that time I realized that chiropractic was what I wanted to do with my life. If I could have such a dramatic change in my own health, I wanted to learn how I could help other people do the same.”

Meet Dr. Pierre Paradis
"I received my first chiropractic adjustment when I was 14 years old. I was playing contact hockey at that time and a body check during a game caused a great deal of pain in my back. As a result, my parents, who themselves were receiving chiropractic care, decided to bring me to their chiropractor, Dr. Kenneth DeHaas. I’ve always had an interest in health sciences, but ever since my first adjustment, I was drawn to the chiropractic profession. Dr. DeHaas was great; not only as a chiropractor, but also in guiding me in my decision to become a chiropractor.

How does stress affects our health?🤔
There are many factors that can lead to the onset of chronic and debilitating stress.
🔺Poor mental health related to depression, anxiety, and more
🔺 Traumatic events such as natural disasters or violence
🔺Taking care of a sick family member or elderly parent
🔺Constant exposure to negativity in the news
🔺Chronic exposure to blue light from electronics
🔺 Poor health habits related to sleep, diet, exercise and more
🔺Chronic illness
🔺In general- having no stress management techniques in place

⭕️When your body is in a constant state of stress, it can have some pretty major repercussions on your life. The body is not meant to be in a constant state of stress. It doesn’t allow the body to go into important states of repair and rest.

This can lead to a breakdown of vital cellular processes, certain organ functions, and ultimately manifest as disease. Chronic stress has been linked to issues like heart disease, diabetes, and depression.

📌The clinic will be closed on Monday, February 16 for Family Day.
One of our priorities is to serve families in our community. Often when we are caring for a patient, we have conversations about other loved ones or family members who may also be struggling with a health concern.
We encourage them to bring the others in for an assessment, so the whole family achieves better health together. Family care covers all ages, from newborns to kids to teenagers, from young adults to retirees to the elderly—we care for everyone! We can conveniently schedule family appointments, working with schedules involving work, school, sports, and other extra-curriculars.

💪The human body is an animate object—a living system that reacts to stress by adapting and often becoming stronger. It has reactionary forces within, allowing it to resist or compensate for challenges, pain, or strain.

🧬This adaptability is mediated by complex systems like the autonomic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. When confronted with stress, hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol are released, triggering the body’s “fight-or-flight” response. Blood flow increases to muscles, alertness sharpens, and energy mobilizes—all preparing the body to face challenges. Over time, with proper care and balance, this system helps build resilience rather than breakdown.

🩻This capacity to respond and adapt to stress is a crucial concept in health and chiropractic care. When the nervous system is working well and spine alignment is maintained, the body’s natural reactionary forces become more effective, helping it heal and strengthen from within.

🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♂️The Embrace Winter Run in Ottawa is this Sunday, February 15.❄
🚰Your Chiropractor will have stressed the importance of proper hydration for maintaining spinal health because the intervertebral discs that cushion the spine rely heavily on water to maintain their structure and function.
❓How do you hydrate hygienically?
➡Stainless steel water bottles are durable, and handy to transport when you are on the go. But, just like any other water bottle, they need regular cleaning to keep them fresh and free from bacteria.
💡Here’s the right way to clean your steel water bottle and keep it in top condition.
🟢Rinse It After Every Use
🟢Use Mild Dish Soap
🟢Deep Clean with Baking Soda and Vinegar
🟢Don’t Forget the Lid and Straw
🟢Air Dry Completely

Do you have Tech Neck? Common warning signs include a forward-jutting chin, rounded shoulders, frequent tension headaches, stiffness in the upper back, tingling in the arms or hands, and difficulty maintaining upright posture. If left untreated, Tech Neck can progress into a chronic, even permanent issue.
When standing and using your phone, bring the phone up to eye level instead of dropping your head down. This reduces strain through the neck and upper spine.

❄The Olympic Winter Games are here!❄
❓Why do Olympians Take Their Chiropractors to the Games?
🏒If you have tried a little pond hockey or skating this season, you’ll have a new appreciation for Zambonis, hot floods and mechanical ice scrapers. Scraping the ice and shoveling the snow from outdoor ice surfaces is a workout before the games begin.
😨Hands up if you have felt your low back twinge bent over a shovel or a hockey stick. All those hours at hockey practice have Mom and Dad challenged to keep up with the kids. They’re faster on the ice than it looks from the stands. ⛸
🖥If you want a few tips for warm ups or cool downs before your next adventure, or any other Winter activity advice, we’re here to help.
