DISCLAIMER this page does not provide clinical interventions & is not crisis service The Expressive Arts is an approach that combines poetry & story telling, music & sound, visual arts, movement, drama, presence (and more) to foster deep personal growth and community development. When used therapeutically the expressive arts are a tool for self-discovery, self-care, self-reflection, connecting with our inner-wisdom and for creating our own clarity. It is a resource-based approach, where you can feel supported to explore your inner world. Through presence, my approach is unique to each client and my practice is moment specific, situation specific and person specific. As the client, you get to decide what questions to be with and how. As the practitioner, I will create a safe container for you to engage with your questions through the Expressive Arts. Together we will identify what works for you, and I will honour what you need. You can expect to come away from our time together feeling witnessed and connected. I came to Expressive Arts naturally, as in my personal life I have facilitated monthly women’s Circles for the past nine years. The purpose of these circles is to provide a safe space to foster a supportive community among women where we can tune into ourselves and our own intuition. I offer participants an opportunity to hold space for one another, practice self-reflection and engage with the creative process through journaling, meditation, poetry, music and conversation- all elements of an Expressive Arts practice! These monthly circles invite connection, healing and pause into all of our lives. As a host and facilitator, I curate a safe space and I promote increased well-being for myself and the women who attend these circles. I will draw from this experience and bring it into my practice as I support you. I started my own wellness journey when I attended my first yoga class at 14 years old. Then at 18, I began learning about presence and mindfulness and have continued to practice presence, mindfulness & various forms of meditation ever since. In addition to this practice, I read and write poetry, spend time with nature, dance in my living room and sing while I'm cooking. As a personal interest I also engage regularly with books, articles and podcasts on western psychology and Buddhist psychology. Expressive Arts has its roots in Indigenous ways of healing and I respectfully acknowledge that Indigenous cultures have used the arts for healing since time out of mind. Thank you for reading my bio and for considering me as your practitioner. Through a kind and compassionate approach, I look forward to supporting and igniting your creativity and path to wellness through the therapeutic use of the arts. "Journaling, storytelling, reading literature and poetry, as well as making life maps, videos, and memory books are all forms of expressive art therapy; this can help more mature clients review and make meaning of their lives; this is a way to tell their life stories, as well as work through and heal from traumatic experiences. It also helps patients better engage with family and other significant people in their lives.

Here are some of the many forms of expressive art:

Playing music
Listening to music
Writing lyrics
Theater or improvisation
Reading or writing poetry

When It's Used "Expressive arts therapy is used with both children and adults, as individuals or in groups, to nurture deep personal growth and transformation. For instance, expressive arts therapy for children with behavioral issues might include music, movement, or finger painting. This type of therapy can be especially useful for children, who may not be able to vocalize what they feel. The therapist observes the child’s behavior and impulses and then encourages the child to talk about the experience."

"Expressive arts therapy combines psychology and the creative process to promote emotional growth and healing. This multi-arts, or intermodal, approach to psychotherapy and counseling uses our inborn desire to create; such a therapeutic tool can help initiate change. For some people who have a hard time articulating what they are feeling, self-expression through art can be useful. Expressive arts therapy draws from a variety of art forms, and this integration of methods can help patients access their emotions. Meanwhile, art therapy tends to be based on one particular art form.

Expressive arts therapy has been studied in nursing care settings and can be an effective modality for patients."

"imagination acquires a function of utmost importance in human behavior and development, becoming [a means to] broaden the experience of the man who, being able to imagine what he has not seen, by being able to conceive, based on the stories and descriptions of others, what he has not personally and directly experienced, is not confined to the narrow circle of his own experience but can go far beyond its limits by assimilating, with the help of his imagination, the historical and social experiences of others" ~Vygotski (1982):

"Art therapy helps lower the perception of pain by moving your mental focus away from the painful stimulus. It is not simply a distraction, but rather a way to teach you how to relax and alter your mood, so the pain doesn't control your emotional state."

As part of my studies I am discovering and determining my theoretical orientation. A Person Centered approach comes from Humanistic Theory. "Humanistic psychology began as a philosophical movement to understand what it truly means to be human.
Early humanistic therapists aimed to help their clients in a holistic manner, by looking at the whole of the individual (such as their passions, lived experiences, and relationships) beyond psychiatric conditions.
A humanistic approach to psychotherapy is one that focuses on the whole of the individual. It is built on the notion that all humans possess the capacity to achieve their full potential in life..the therapist creates an environment in which the client is empowered to take ownership of their therapy. In doing so, the client guides the direction of their therapy, while the therapist accompanies them on the journey. The humanistic therapist provides space for the client to express their concerns and feelings, then helps the client reflect and clarify on what they have shared."
