After almost 10 years of prescribing GLP1 medications, and plenty of clinical experience managing patient goals, dosing, side effects, etc - I have put together a course for any health care provider, not just prescribing physicians, to learn more about GLP1 medications for weight management. It is still in its early stages, so more will be added, but feel free to share with anyone you think may be interested

For anyone looking to integrate GLP1 medications into their practice and feel confident using them as a tool for weight management and cardiometabolic disease

On Wednesday’s we wear Pink! … But really I am wearing pink scrubs today for Breast Cancer Awareness.

October is 🎀 I previously did not support products that profited from chronic diseases, but this summer I went through my own breast cancer scare. Thankfully I am ok and my masses were benign, but it was a reminder that cancer does not discriminate. Even a healthy can be faced with cancer.

Do your own self exams. Go for your screening. And talk to your doctor/health care provider if you have any concerns.

Self screening is still important!

Self screening is still important!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 🎀
This is your friendly reminder to self screen. Self screening is a powerful tool to get to know your body and detect any unusual changes early. If you notice anything abnormal, talk to your family care provider to get it evaluated.
Not all lumps are cancer - BC Cancer describes that up to 90% of breast lumps are not cancer. However, if you notice something new, abnormal for you, or any of the changes mentioned in this post, there is no harm in getting checked out.

Many people, both men and women, ask about their hormones; which is why we offer hormone intakes with RN Patricia to discuss your concerns, give you testing options (no commitment to any specific testing or treatments) and then a follow up with myself. To learn more call 778-478-0048 and ask to schedule a hormone intake or ask Nurse Patricia some questions.

Health Benefits of Apples

It is fall in the Okanagan and that means it is apple season! Whether it is a gala, granny smith, red delicious, fuji, honey crisp or a pink lady, all apples contain numerous phytonutrients to benefit your health.

To start, apples contain soluble and insoluble fibre - up to 20% of your daily requirement from one small apple! This fibre can help lower your cholesterol by 8-12% which in turn can decrease your risk of heart disease. This high concentration of fibre can also help stabilize your blood sugar by slowing the absorption of carbohydrates into your blood stream and promoting better sugar metabolism by your body. Because of these effect of the pectin fibre, apples are a safe and effective way to balance your blood sugar and reduce your risk of heart disease

The fibre benefit alone makes apples a great food choice, but apples are also high in flavonoids, specifically one called quercetin. Quercetin (also found in onions) is a flavonoid that helps reduce asthma and seasonal allergies by acting as a natural anti-histamine. By stabilizing cells that release histamine (mast cells), quercetin can aid in the reduction of swelling and redness in your airways caused by histamine. The high levels of various flavonoids in apples also contribute to their cardiovascular benefits by acting as antioxidants. These flavonoids, with their antioxidant action, prevent the build up of oxidized lipids causing plaques in your vessels, as well as, aids in blood sugar regulation, both of which contribute to a reduction in heart disease.

Apples have various health benefits (too many to list!) and research shows that eating apples can reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, asthma and type 2 diabetes. So, I can’t help thinking that maybe there is some truth to the old saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away...”
