53% fewer hospital readmissions.

That's what pulmonary rehabilitation delivers - and it's one of the most well-established outcomes in respiratory medicine.

But here's the part that's hard to sit with: only about 1 in 10 people who need pulmonary rehab ever actually access it.

Waitlists. Travel. No local program. Life getting in the way.

That's exactly why iMaster Health exists - to bring clinician-designed pulmonary rehabilitation to your home, on your schedule, with no waitlist.

If you or someone you love is living with COPD, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, or another chronic lung condition - your program is closer than you think.

Struggling to catch your breath? These 5 exercises can make a real difference. 🫁

We just published a new guide on the iMaster Health blog: 5 Breathing Exercises for COPD That Can Help You Breathe Easier at Home. It covers the exact techniques our clinical team uses in our virtual pulmonary rehab program.

Inside the post:
✅ Pursed-lip breathing (reduces breathlessness in minutes)
✅ Diaphragmatic breathing (retrain your most powerful breathing muscle)
✅ Controlled coughing (clear your airways the right way)
✅ The 4-7-8 technique (calms anxiety AND breathlessness)
✅ Paced breathing during activity (so daily tasks feel possible again)

These aren't just relaxation tips - they're evidence-based techniques used in pulmonary rehabilitation programs worldwide. And you can start practising all of them today, from home.

What actually happens in your lungs when you have COPD 🫁

With COPD, two things can happen. First, the airways become inflamed or narrowed. Second, the alveoli lose their elasticity so air gets trapped inside.

That trapped air is why you feel that uncomfortable ‘full chest’ sensation. And why breathing out is often harder than breathing in.

COPD Myth #1: You just have to live with breathlessness

Here’s the truth: breathlessness from COPD can be significantly reduced with the right exercise program.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation - that’s structured breathing and exercise training - has been shown to reduce breathlessness, improve exercise tolerance & boost quality of life in COPD patients.

Is Pursed Lip Breathing Actually Helpful? 😮‍💨🫁

Pursed lip breathing creates a slight back-pressure in your airways. This keeps them open longer during exhalation, which means less air gets trapped in your lungs.

The result? Less breathlessness, better oxygen levels & more control during activity.

Why nose breathing beats mouth breathing 👃🫁

Why your CO2 matters! 🫁

In some lung conditions, exhaling can be slower or incomplete, which means CO2 doesn’t clear efficiently and can build up.

When CO2 rises, you may feel:
- more short of breath
- tired or foggy-headed
- like you’re breathing fast but not getting enough air out

Breath pacing helps. Try inhale slowly through your nose then exhale longer than you inhale. Just 3 steady breaths can reset your rhythm and help your lungs work better.
