Why must we choose ONE part of who we are? 🧡
The Canadian system forces Indigenous people—especially those with mixed Métis and First Nations heritage—to choose a single identity, band, or nation for recognition and benefits.
This colonial approach doesn't reflect our understanding of kinship and belonging. Our identities aren't checkboxes on government forms!
The Indian Act, with its rigid definitions, continues to fragment our communities and disconnect us from our full heritage. When forced to select just one band or nation, we're asked to silence parts of ourselves that are equally valid and real.
At Wahkohtowin Wellness, we believe identity flows through relationships, not bureaucracy. The word "Wahkohtowin" itself speaks to kinship systems that have sustained us for generations—systems that recognise the complexity of belonging.
BELONGING SHOULD NOT BE LIMITED by colonial categories! 🧡
We're curious: How has this "choose one" approach affected your connection to community? Have you experienced the pain of being "boxed in"?
As we walk toward healing, let's imagine: What would a system honouring the fullness of Indigenous identity look like? How might communities define their own citizenship beyond government constraints?
We invite your stories, your wisdom, your truth. Because real change begins with our voices.
