Lately, I’ve been having so many beautiful conversations around the question: “What is yoga?”
As many of you know, I’m currently deep in continued yoga teacher training and it’s brought up some really thoughtful, curious questions from people wanting to understand yoga more deeply.
I often hear things like: “Oh, I’m not flexible enough.” Or “My brain won’t be quiet enough to do yoga.”
These are such common thoughts, and such beautiful entry points to a bigger understanding.
I’ve had the privilege of sharing with people that yoga is so much more than stretching or being able to “turn your mind off.” In fact, it’s not about the poses at all, though they can be a powerful way into yoga.
Yes, the postures (asana) have amazing physical benefits such as strength, mobility and body awareness. It doesn’t stop there, the root of yoga goes far beyond the physical.
🌀 It’s a path of self-awareness, intentional living, spirituality (whatever that means to you) and connection.
🌀 It includes breathwork (pranayama), meditation, ethical living, discipline, and self-study.
🌀 It invites us to observe, not control, the mind.
This ancient practice, gives us tools to practice regulating our nervous system, to create space between thought and reaction and to live life intentionally with presence and purpose.
You don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need to be calm. You don’t need to fit a mold.
You just need to be curious and willing to meet yourself where you are.
✨ That is yoga. ✨
