Body-based comments, even “positive” ones, can reinforce harm in ways we don’t always see. We can’t know someone’s health, history, or relationship with their body just by looking at them. We can find other ways to connect with people without bringing body comments into it.🩵

🏄‍♀️ Surfing the Urge 🏄‍♂️

Urges in eating disorder recovery can feel overwhelming and very convincing.

“Surfing the urge” is about noticing what’s happening, getting curious, and giving the wave space to pass, without needing to fight it or act on it. Even a smallest pause can be a powerful shift.

Creating ANY bit of space between urge and action is working to rebuild trust, choice, and capacity in your system! 🌊

Physical sensations can bring up a lot of emotions in recovery. That’s because it’s not just the feeling, but the stories that get attached to the feelings. These stories and beliefs can create distress, fear, anger, and urgency in the system and that feels dangerous. Your nervous system is just trying to survive, given the information it has!

Learning how to understand, soothe, and comfort yourself and your parts when there’s activation is a powerful way of building capacity, safety, and trust in recovery. It takes time and practice, and a whole lot of compassion! Getting to a place of neutrality with physical sensations and with your body is possible. ✨

Physical sensations can be some of the most activating parts of eating disorder recovery.

Fullness, bloating, hunger, warmth after eating… these aren’t just “sensations.” They can carry a history of fear, control, and judgment.

If sensations feel overwhelming in recovery, it often means your nervous system is adjusting to being tuned into your body after a period of disconnection. Cues may feel louder before they start to feel neutral.

Anxiety and eating struggles are deeply connected. When the nervous system doesn’t feel safe, food rules can feel like relief. Over time, however, these rules often increase fear rather than soothe it.

When we learn to work with and better understand the anxiety rather than trying to fight or control it, internal safety grows and food often feels less charged.

If you’re worried about someone you love, it makes sense to feel unsure about what to say.

You don’t need perfect words. Care, curiosity, and patience matter more than getting it “right.”

Support is possible, for them and for you. 💛

✨Noticing glimmers isn’t about forcing or fixing anything.
It’s about gently guiding your nervous system to recognize moments of safety.

They are often small.
They are often brief.

You don’t have to do anything with them. Sometimes just noticing is enough. ✨

Eating disorders are widely misunderstood. These common myths and misconceptions can result in an increase in shame and delayed care.

EDs are not about looking a certain way, having “enough” symptoms, or lacking willpower. They are complex, adaptive responses to distress and are shaped by environment, biology, and lived experiences.

If any of this resonates for you or someone you care about, know that help is available and you don’t have to meet a stereotype to deserve support. 💙

Body image struggles don’t come from nowhere.

In Internal Family Systems (IFS), we understand that there is often a protective part that closely monitors the body. Not because it wants you to feel bad, but because it learned that bodies are treated differently in the world.

In a culture shaped by weight stigma, this part learned that:
• appearance can impact safety
• size can affect belonging
• being “acceptable” can reduce harm

That isn’t vanity. It’s survival.

This is why forcing body positivity often doesn’t work. A part of you may not feel safe letting go of vigilance yet.

IFS and weight-neutral, HAES-aligned work doesn’t ask you to love your body. It invites something gentler:
➡️ less fear
➡️ more respect
➡️ greater internal safety

When protective parts feel understood and supported, they don’t have to work as hard and body image often softens naturally.

You are not broken.
You are protected.
