Diabetes can cause changes in the skin of your foot. At times your foot may become very dry. The skin may peel and crack and is caused by nerve damage that affects your body’s ability to control the oil and moisture in your foot.

After bathing, dry your feet and seal in the remaining moisture with a thin coat of plain petroleum jelly, an unscented hand cream, or other such products. Do not put oils or creams between your toes. The extra moisture can lead to infection. Also, avoid soaking your feet—that can dry your skin.

Foot wear can be a significant factor associated with painful feet.

The problems commonly seen in our office include shoes that are much too flexible and lack midfoot support.

TIP: If you can bend your shoe so that the heel and toe touch together, your shoe lacks support.

Sept. 30 will mark the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation — an annual commemoration honouring the children who died while attending residential schools and the survivors, families and communities still affected by the legacy of the residential school system.

The tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools have inspired us, and so many others, to broaden our understanding and continued education on this subject.

Our feet work hard all day; walking to work, standing in one spot waiting for the bus, and wearing tight shoes or heels for hours.

When we finally settle in for a night’s sleep, you may experience a throbbing or sharp pain in your feet. While exertion may be the cause of achy feet, sometimes feet start to hurt suddenly and without any explanation.

When you experience unexplained foot pain, it may be a serious condition requiring more attention. It is important to understand the causes of foot pain and find the right remedy.

Foot pain could also start interfering with your sleep, and ultimately affect your normal daily life and overall health. So, it’s always best to call us and book an appointment.

Feeling off balance? It could be caused by uncontrolled diabetes.

Nerves that control the muscles in your feet can be damaged due to diabetes, resulting in changes to the shape of your feet. This in turn can result in higher pressure points and possibly a loss of balance when walking.

Foot health is just as important for children as it is for adults!

Children's feet grow very quickly. They should always have well-fitting shoes, their walking patterns should be checked for feet turning out or in, and any foot pain or swelling that occurs without explanation should be treated.

If you do notice anything out of the ordinary, call us to arrange an appointment. No referral needed!

By taking a few basic precautions, you can give your child the gift of foot health to take with them into adulthood.
