When the body is injured, it creates scar tissue as part of the healing process. Over time, the hashtag like layered scar tissue can cause restrictions and alter function. The scar can become the point of many problems from pain and decreased range of motion to postural imbalance and even organ disfunction. Massage helps to break down binding fibres that have become more static than supple, freeing the body to regain homeostasis and overall improved health.
However, if approached too soon or too aggressively, there is the possibility of prolonging symptoms and creating more damage.
This is important to consider.
It is also a wonderful analogy for emotional, mental, and spiritual injuries. When harm occurs, the healing starts as soon as it can. Healing an acute bodily injury requires time, rest, good nutrition, hydration and a support system. You wouldn’t start stretching and massaging a fresh incision after surgery. That would just create a larger, extremely painful and possibly chronic problem. Same goes for ‘unseen’ trauma. Poked at too soon, emotional, spiritual, and mental injuries may never heal. They need nurturing. Time. Awareness.
A soft place to transform. So the acute doesn’t become chronic.
Now, let’s zoom out for a bigger picture: Whether we want to admit it or not, even if we are ‘dealing’ with it in various and creative ways, we are living IN trauma. A strong word, yes, and apt af. Our lives have been amped with insidious stress for over a year. And the scar tissue that is trying to heal our current emotional, mental, spiritual and even physical wounds, keeps getting reinjured with increased rules and mixed information and a ongoing state of emergency. This is one reason why compassion, for self and others, needs to be amplified. We are living a day to day complex trauma. There’s a saying, ‘hurt people hurt people’... playing out in so many ways recently...people pitted against each other. Divisiveness. Judgement.
Let us override the system with COMPASSION. We can’t expect ourselves, or anyone, to be functioning optimally these days, but we can ease the discord with understanding, effort, love and compassion.
And dancing.
Much love.
