Is your child overly sensitive to touch? Do they experience big behaviours when exploring new textures, getting dressed, or eating new foods? This is known as Tactile defensiveness.

Here at Sensational Skills OT in Kincardine, we offer Sensory Integration Therapy, which works through specific movement and vestibular activities to help the brain better process and regulate sensory input.

Good vibes in OT! Our vibration board gives kids calming sensory input, helps build body awareness and core strength, and supports better focus and regulation—all through fun, meaningful movement. One simple tool, so many big benefits for growing bodies and minds!

BONUS: having the kiddo give some highfives as an added vestibular/motor coordination challenge!

It's report card season!

Lots of kids struggle with attention and focus at school. It can be stressful; we know.

We love helping kiddos strengthen their executive functioning, self-regulation, and sensory integration and processing skills to help with their ability to thrive in the learning environment alongside their peers.

We love turning challenges into play!

This week in OT, one of our friends took on a fun (and tricky) balance and coordination challenge:

- Standing sideways on a rippled balance beam to activate core and ankle stability

- Holding a blue ball between their legs to strengthen pelvic and inner thigh control

- Bouncing a small ball into targets to build visual-motor coordination

- Shuffling down the beam to add an extra layer of balance and motor planning

This activity was a super fun way to engage multiple sensory systems while targeting balance, coordination, and body awareness — all through play.

Our favorite tool in sensory integration therapy!

A platform swing is a flat, sturdy swing that lets kids sit, lie, or kneel while moving in different directions. We use the swing for many different reasons during sessions, including:

✔️ Sensory Processing: Helps kids regulate vestibular (movement) and proprioceptive (body awareness) input.
✔️ Core Strength & Balance: Encourages stability and postural control.
✔️ Attention & Regulation: Calms the nervous system or provides alerting input, depending on how it’s used.
✔️ Motor Planning: Builds coordination and confidence in movement.

You will also see us stacking the platform swing to add a challenge to other activities, such as swinging with ring toss, or lying in the prone position and grabbing items off the floor.

This week in OT, we brought out one of our classics — rowing the swing!

This fun activity works the core and upper body muscles while providing vestibular and proprioceptive input to support body awareness and balance.

Notice how the swing rocks side to side? That extra movement adds a challenge, engaging the arms and torso to stabilize the swing. Children who are new to this exercise often struggle to stay upright—or even on the swing at first! But with time and practice, we’ve helped countless kiddos build the upper body strength and coordination to master it.

Swing activities like this help kids develop the foundational skills they need for everyday tasks like handwriting, dressing, and play.
And the best part? They’re really fun!

Balance, Strength, and Fun on a BOSU!

You might recognize this half-dome ball — it’s called a BOSU (Both Sides Up)! In OT sessions, we use it to challenge kids’ balance, core strength, coordination, and postural control in a fun, dynamic way. We often incorporate BOSU exercises into games and playful activities, so kids build strength and confidence without even realizing they’re “working out".
One way we do this is by having the child stand on the BOSU while engaging in another activity, such as throwing ring toss or bean bags. It is also used in our clinic as a little "boost" for our smaller friends that can't quite reach the trapeze :)

This week, we worked on visual discrimination – the skill of noticing differences and similarities between shapes, letters, numbers, or objects.

Our activity? Sorting colorful pompoms into “houses”! One of our little friends got creative and even made a multi-color house for the rainbow pompoms 🌈

Bonus: while building visual discrimination, they also practiced fine motor skills using the pincer grasp… and we leveled it up with tongs for an extra challenge!

Playful, hands-on, and skill-building – that’s therapy at its best! 🥰

W-sitting...What's that?

If you notice your child frequently resorting to the W-sitting position, it could be an indication of underlying challenges with postural stability and control.
