Bandhas, Core & More: Your Stable Centre for a Powerful Practice
with Roland Jensch + Liz Huntly/Jensch
Saturday, March 28 | 1-3PM
studio330 Westend Wellness

The focus of this workshop is on integrated core health, linking a Western understanding of core anatomy with the traditional concepts of Bandhas.

Bandhas—derived from the Sanskrit word Bandh, meaning “to bind,” “join,” or “contain”—are subtle muscle contractions. By connecting our knowledge of anatomy and the function of the Bandhas, we create enormous potential for stability and strength in our physical practice.

Bandhas, Core & More
with Roland Jensch + Liz Huntly/Jensch
Saturday, March 28 | 1-3PM

Roland Jensch
Roland has over two decades of profound yoga experience. His genuine, lifelong passion for movement and meditation has lead him to travel far and wide to train with some of the world’s most renowned teachers in the east and west. He has taught worldwide at festivals and conferences, and in teacher trainings. His classes are thoughtfully constructed and often challenging, yet always delivered in a clear, comprehensible manner. His instruction is grounded in detailed anatomical knowledge, biomechanics and philosophical concepts, balancing traditional aspects with contemporary movement concepts, and often includes a good dose of humour.

Liz Huntly
Liz (she/her) has travelled worldwide leading workshops and retreats, and guest teaching at festivals, conferences and in teacher trainings. Rooted in her own intense practice, her teaching offers a unique blend of detailed anatomy and alignment instruction with storytelling, philosophy, meditation and mindfulness, marrying modern and traditional approaches to yoga. When not on the mat, you’ll find her cooking up sweet treats at her Sydenham bakery Grains & Goods, or serving up delicious coffee at the Grains & Goods coffee bar located at the westend studio.

What Does “Asana” Mean?

The word asana comes from Sanskrit and translates to “seat” or “posture.” In the ancient Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, asana is described as a position that is steady and comfortable, originally intended to support meditation.

Over time, the meaning expanded to include the physical poses practiced in modern yoga. While these postures build strength and flexibility, their deeper purpose is to cultivate balance between effort and ease.

At its core, asana is not just about how a pose looks, but how it feels... grounded, aware, and fully present in the moment.

PROP TALK

Bolsters might look like oversized pillows in the corner of the studio, but they can completely change your yoga practice.

They make poses more comfortable and accessible, whether that’s sitting on one to ease tight hips, placing one under your knees in savasana, or supporting your chest in a gentle backbend. Instead of forcing flexibility, bolsters let your body relax into the shape of a pose.

They’re especially powerful in restorative and yin classes. When your body feels fully supported, your nervous system can actually calm down. Your breath slows. Your muscles soften. You settle. And honestly? A bolster under your knees in savasana just feels really good.

Using a bolster isn’t “doing less.” It’s practicing in a way that supports your body—so you can keep showing up to your mat for years to come.

ART IN THE STUDIO

Our studio proudly features artwork by Heather Haynes, whose powerful pieces focus on gender inequality and social justice.

Heather’s work is rooted in the belief that true environmental, economic, and social recovery begins with supporting, empowering, and educating young girls. Yet around the world (especially in developing countries) many females continue to face inequality, violence, and fear. Her art brings awareness to these realities while inspiring hope and change.

Check her out at heatherhaynes.com and keep your peepers at the ready for more beautiful pieces from other talented local artists.
