Meet Dr. Brandon Stephens!

Alma Mater: The University of Waterloo (BSc and OD)

Advice for someone wanting to do Optometry as a career: Embrace a lifetime of learning! Optometry has undergone significant changes in the last decade and a half with expansion in scope and practice and more likely on the horizon. There is always new research being published, new diagnostic tests and treatments available, so prepare to be adaptable. Also, always remember you’re treating people, not just a condition!

The best place I’ve travelled: Italy! I was able to spend a week on the Amalfi coast and another week in Tuscany. It’s absolutely on the list for a return trip in the future to explore the rest of the country.

What I like to do in my free time: I have trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu since 2014 and earned my purple belt in July 2025. It’s a great way to exercise and use your head at the same time, learning and executing new techniques and trying to think a step or two ahead of your opponent. Three years ago my daughter started training BJJ as well and I love helping coach the kids classes.

What advice would you give to someone going into optometry?: As busy and stressful as it can be at times, don’t forget to enjoy yourself. I’ve met so many wonderful people through optometry school and now in practice and I think that’s one of the things that makes this profession so rewarding.

What is the best part of your day?: I love the walk home from school every day with my kids. I love being able to catch up with them and hear their stories about their day.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?: I’m naturally more of a night owl, but I’ve learned to embrace the early mornings since having kids.

Advice for someone wanting to do Optometry as a career: Being an Optometrist is more than just “Which is better, 1 or 2?”. It’s about learning how to problem solve with what your patients come to you with, while also building a relationship of trust in you as their eye care provider. It’s our job to ensure we’re providing the person in our chair quality vision, not just for that instance, but for life. With the scope of Optometry expanding, it’s a rewarding profession to combine your love of health care, and a desire to make an immediate impact in a person’s life everyday- we help change what people see!

Where was the best place you’ve travelled to: I love travel… While it’s hard to choose a favourite place to have visited, a highlight was definitely hiking Machu Picchu! That excursion was paired after an optometric volunteer humanitarian project in an outskirt of Lima, Peru, and the views were simply breathtaking!

What’s something you’re really good at: Most people don’t realize this about me, as many people only know my more sciency side. But I’m very artistic, and enjoy painting, drawing, and design! I’ve also played classical piano for several years, and enjoy listening to and making music.

What do they do with them, you may ask? They’re shipped overseas to people who can truly benefit from them — giving your old eyewear a brand-new purpose. 🤍🌍

Meet Dr. Erin Runté!

Alma Mater: Dalhousie University (BSc), Aston University (Optometry), University of Waterloo (Optometry)

Advice to someone looking at Optometry as a career: Always volunteer to see the most difficult patients during clinics and clerkships because you have amazing teachers that will help you and one day you will be on your own making the decisions, so it’s helpful to have some help with the challenging cases the first time you see them.

Best place I’ve travelled to: Catamaran trip through the Greek islands, Dublin as a city.

Favourite way to celebrate: Cam (my husband) and I celebrate our wedding anniversary with a hike the same number of kilometres as years we’ve been married with our dog Cabot, we just did our 6km hike for 6 years this year.

What I like to do in my free time: I like using my brain in a totally different way than at work, I like taking art classes (painting, pottery, etc), going to trivia nights, and reading books.

💡 Advice to someone going into Optometry: Don’t be afraid to ask questions - both during school and after you graduate! Optometry is such a hands-on and constantly evolving field, and you’ll learn so much from the people around you. Staying curious and open-minded is one of the best ways to grow.

🌍 The best place I’ve traveled: A road trip to the Yukon has been one of my all-time favourite adventures. The breathtaking landscapes, and quiet beauty of the North made it an unforgettable experience.

🌿 Favourite weekend acitivity: On weekends, I love getting outdoors and going for a hike to recharge. And if the weather isn’t cooperating, you’ll usually find me cozied up at home, snuggling with my cats and enjoying a good book.

🎸 One thing I’ve always wanted to learn: I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the guitar. It’s a skill I hope to take up one day.

Advice to someone looking at Optometry as a career: It’s a great profession if you are interested in healthcare and the many avenues it can take you - treating disease, retail, medical aesthetics, business ownership and more! Every day is rewarding in many different ways. 👓

Favourite family tradition: For my girls’ birthdays everyone who has celebrated with them signs their name in a book that suits their current age. A collection of good books and nice memories! 📖

Favourite trip: It’s a tie - Bali for the great food and places to see, AND Disney with our kids for their first ever trip. 🏰
