A new electrocardiogram (ECG) machine is now in place at the Cancer Centre that is helping to improve patient flow, access to technology and resulting in quicker turnaround to diagnostics. Prior to the arrival of this new machine, patients who required an ECG would have to wait until one was available elsewhere in the hospital and then brought to the Cancer Centre. This could result in significant wait times for patients and now, that wait is no more.

An ECG machine is a tool that is used to check a patient’s heart rhythm and electrical activity. For cancer patients this information helps the care team understand how a patient’s heart is functioning. For many cancer patients this is a critical tool to asses and monitor heart rhythm as certain cancers and cancer treatments can affect the heart.

The purchase of this new ECG machine was made possible through a generous donation to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation

Problem solver – that’s one way to describe Lori Silva.

She’s the charge technologist at Breast Imaging Kingston, a state-of-the-art facility which offers screening and precision diagnosis of breast cancer.

Silva wears many hats to ensure the centre runs smoothly.

“I do the ordering, I do the scheduling, I make sure everyone has what they need to do their job,” explains Silva. “I help coordinate with the radiologists if they have special requests, I coordinate all the education and training.”

She may be behind the scenes, but the work she does directly impacts patients. By taking care of the day-to-day operations, she’s setting her team up for success so they can focus on their patients and the services they provide.

“I’m proud of the work I do because I think I help my colleagues do their job better. They don’t have to worry about where the supplies come from, or how to get a specimen from here to Kingston General Hospital. I look after all of that so they can concentrate on making sure patients get top notch health care.”

But she isn’t always in the background. If someone from her team calls in sick, Silva jumps in and covers procedures, meaning she also has to stay up-to-date with the latest education.

And patients are in good hands when Silva is involved with an appointment. She’s been an X-ray technologist with Kingston Health Sciences Centre for 37 years.

“My favourite part is diagnostic, where someone comes in and the challenge is trying to image a specific spot the best way humanly possible for the doctor to read so they can diagnose and ultimately treat medical conditions.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year’s campaign wants to ensure all women have access to screenings. That’s why Silva is encouraging women in the community to book their appointments at Breast Imaging Kingston.

With services available seven days a week, patients across the region have access to the support they need and high quality care they deserve.
