Tools in the toolkit

We often hear from patients "My Medical Doctor has completely ignored my thyroid hormone symptoms". Check out our previous post where we discussed the types of hypothyroidism. That may be true in some cases, but we like to think that most healthcare providers get into their respective professions to help people.

You have to consider the tools in ones toolkit. If you have primary hypothyroidism there is a great chance you'll have been prescribed thyroid hormone but if you fall into one of the other categories (functional or subclinical), you don't need medication. There are plenty of nutritional and lifestyle changes, neutraceuticals, and herbs that can help support you before you need a prescription. In fact, most thyroid conditions develop over several years so this is where Naturopathic Doctors with a special interest in hormone health shine.

So give your healthcare provider some grace; they are operating with the tools they have. Don't expect them to know it all. It's up to you to create your own health team full of experts so that you can seek out the answers you need. We're here for you!

14 day vehicle impoundment, 30 day license suspension, just the beginning

Over the last five days Kingston Police Traffic Safety Officers have charged four persons with Stunt Driving. A person may be charged with stunt driving when driving 40 km/h or more over the speed limit on roads with a speed limit less than 80 km/h or driving 50 km/h or more over the speed limit.

On June 3rd one driver was caught driving 106 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Bath Road, while another driver was stopped for driving 99 km/h in a posted 50 km/h.

On June 4th a driver was charged after travelling 95 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on the Third Crossing.

On June 7th, a driver was pulled over and charged with Stunt Driving after travelling 121 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Perth Road.

No matter how good a driver may be, the laws of physics remain the same. Speeding will increase stopping distance, reduce field of vision, and make it harder to react in time to changing conditions or unexpected actions by other road users. And with these excessive speeds the risk of serious injury or death becomes far greater.

Beyond the serious risks, an immediate 30-day driver’s license suspension and an immediate 14-day vehicle impoundment at roadside (whether it is your vehicle or not) are just the beginning of severe consequences. Persons charged with Stunt Driving will also face:

• a minimum fine of $2,000 and a maximum fine of $10,000
• a jail term of up to six months
• for a 1st conviction a licence suspension minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 3 years
• for a 2nd conviction a licence suspension minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 10 years
• for a 3rd conviction a lifetime suspension, reducible after 10 years under certain criteria
• for a 4th conviction a lifetime suspension, non-reducible
• six demerit points
• a mandatory driver improvement course, upon conviction

Drivers convicted stunt driving will experience a substantial increase in their insurance rates or could become uninsurable.
