Move Authentically Physiotherapy

Move Authentically Physiotherapy Move Better, Breathe Better, Live Better! Each individual has a unique way of moving that they have learned throughout their life.

If one is missing movement, flexibility or strength in an area, another area will adapt and compensate. Throughout one’s life we accumulate these movement errors and they will eventually cause pain. At MAP we unravel these individual movement problems, like we are piecing together a puzzle. By examining the whole body’s movement we will find each individual’s true movement pattern.

Lately I’ve been craving little pockets of calm, and this was one of them 🌈

I sat down with no expectations, just colours, and surprisingly found myself drawn to this page.

As I filled the page with bright, happy colours, I could feel my mind slowing down, my shoulders relaxing, everything softening a little.

A gentle reminder that sometimes the best thing we can do is pause…and just breathe 💫

Does your neck move the same both ways?
Try this quick check 👆

In this video, we’re looking at neck side flexion and rotation — two simple movements that can tell you a lot.

Do you feel stiffness on one side?
Does one direction feel harder or more limited?
Do symptoms show up when you move?

These are all clues your body is giving you.

Limited motion isn’t something to ignore — it often shows up before pain becomes more persistent.

If your neck feels restricted, we can help you work through it with a plan that’s specific to you.

A little late posting this from yesterday’s wonderful Feldenkrais class with Kirsteen McLeod. We focused on the neck and shoulders, and it felt amazing to slow down, move with awareness, and release so much tension. Such a great reminder of how small, mindful movements can make a big difference. Grateful for the experience and looking forward to the next class! 😊

Why is belly breathing so important? 🫁
Many people develop dysfunctional breathing patterns without realizing it. Instead of breathing low into the belly, they breathe high into the chest.
But our lungs are actually designed to work best lower down.
When you breathe into your belly, the diaphragm moves downward and draws air into the lower parts of the lungs. This area of the lungs is more efficient at exchanging oxygen.
Gravity pulls more blood toward the bottom of the lungs, so when air reaches this area, oxygen transfer works better.
Better breathing can support:
• Improved oxygen exchange
• Reduced tension in the neck and shoulders
• More efficient breathing patterns
If you’re constantly breathing high into your chest, it may be a sign of dysfunctional breathing.
Learning how to restore belly breathing can make a big difference in how your body feels and functions.

🫁 Could your breathing pattern be contributing to your pain, tension, or fatigue?
Many people don’t realize they have a Dysfunctional Breathing Pattern — but it can play a big role in neck and shoulder tension, headaches, poor recovery, and even feeling constantly “on edge.”
In this video, I share a quick and simple test called the Sniff Test that can give you a clue about how well your breathing muscles are working together.
It only takes a few seconds to try — and the results can be very revealing.
Your breathing should be:
✨ Efficient
✨ Quiet
✨ Led by your diaphragm
If other muscles are doing too much of the work, it can create unnecessary tension throughout your body.
Try the test and see what you notice.
If something doesn’t feel right, breathing retraining can make a huge difference in how your body feels and functions.
📍At Move Authentically Physiotherapy, we assess breathing as part of the whole-body picture of pain and movement.
💬 Let me know in the comments — did you pass the sniff test?
