Only 5 days until the big day! To round out our introductions, we are so excited to introduce Hugh Christopher Brown, who will be performing at the conference!

Born and bred in Toronto, and longtime NYC musical mainstay before setting up his studio in the old post office on Wolfe Island, multi-instrumentalist and music producer Hugh Christopher “Chris” Brown has “a real talent for writing thought-provoking political songs that somehow manage to keep the feet tapping and the mind racing at the same time” (All Music Guide). Beyond his own music, Chris has performed and recorded (usually organ, piano and clavinet – but sometimes trombone, tuba or other instruments) for many stellar artists including Ani DiFranco, Joan As Police Woman, Tony Scherr, Ba*****ed Ladies, Ashley MacIsaac, Crash Test Dummies and Jen Chapin, among others. Brown was one of the primary singers and songwriters for the alternative rock band Bourbon Tabernacle Choir in the 1980s and 1990s and when that band broke up, he continued performing as a duo with his Bourbon bandmate Kate Fenner. Chris currently divides his time between Brooklyn, NY, and Wolfe Island, Ontario, producing albums, touring and performing solo or with many of his musical colleagues including Kate Fenner and his trio, The Ropes. Chris is also a passionate and committed social justice activist and founded the Pros and Cons program volunteering at prisons where he continues to run music workshops. The “inescapably honest and sincere” (Exclaim!) album Chris recorded and produced with the prisoners Postcards from the County (available as a free download) and Chris’ ongoing work with the prisoners has been acknowledged and hailed by the Toronto Star, Truthout, Examiner.com, CBC (Canada), Sirius XM Canada and many others. The Pros and Cons Program was recently awarded charitable status by the government of Canada. Chris produces albums for Suzanne Jarvie (most recently ‘In The Clear’ which reached #1 on European/UK Americana charts) and David Corley ( ‘Available Light’ – 9/10 stars Uncut) which are both receiving international critical acclaim alongside his solo and band albums.

Brown devotes much of his current energies to Wolfe Island Commons, a not for profit working towards sustainable community practice at the intersection of arts and agriculture.

Only 2 weeks left until our conference, "Beyond the Body!" It's still not too late to register, and workshop spots are filling rapidly! As a sneak peak we wanted to share "Glory," a piece by one of our talented workshop leaders, Dr. Darian Goldin Stahl. "Glory" is one of the many stunning pieces that will be shown at the conference.

Artwork Description: The collage printmaking practice depicted in this latest series of prints present our complex encounters with medicine and illness in ways that are inviting, enstranging, and ultimately, enchanting. Although healthcare can be a heavy topic, dreamy visions of technicolor and even glitter transform a difficult, isolating subject matter into a universal tale that nearly anyone can see themselves within. An amalgamation of appropriated anatomical illustrations from medical history, hospital gowns, contemporary biomedical scans, and the graphic design on an MRI machine become characters in this surreal storyboard on medical experiences. Collage and the layering process of printmaking demonstrate that illness is not just one thing, but a constellation of considerations that merge hospital and home and spill out into every other aspect of one’s life and relationships. It is vital to introduce more complex visual narratives of illness into our society, particularly when topics of health are at the forefront of global attention. Neither triumphant nor tragic, illness and disability are typical and valid ways of moving through the world. Presented as colorful and surreal prints with a hint of lore, I aim for this work to take up the visual and material culture of medicine and re-present them with affirming sensibilities that centre the patient perspective. Although this work represents the experiences of a single woman, opening the imagery through translations of printmaking makes space for everyone to relate to the tales within.

The 2nd Annual Jacalyn Duffin Health & Humanities Conference

2nd Annual Jacalyn Duffin Medical Humanities Conference:

Of Light and Shadow

With sickness there is healing; with pain there is hope. And where there is light, there are shadows.

Light is the bright blue of a sharp breath, the fierce red of pain, blinding white lights of an operating room and bitter-sweet orange medicine on the tongue. It is in the backdrop of the bleak grey of an ever-encroaching disease.
