📘 Timiskaming Speech and Language — May is Speech and Hearing Month! 🧠✍️📚

Did you know that Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) don’t just help with speech? We’re also trained in supporting reading and writing development, especially for children who may be struggling with literacy skills.

This May, we’re highlighting our literacy intervention services — available in both English and French — to help children build the strong foundation they need for lifelong learning.

Saviez-vous que les orthophonistes ne travaillent pas seulement sur la parole? Nous sommes aussi formés pour soutenir le développement de la lecture et de l’écriture, surtout chez les enfants qui ont des difficultés en littératie.

En ce mois de mai, nous mettons en lumière nos services d’intervention en littératie, offerts en français et en anglais, pour aider les enfants à bâtir une base solide pour leurs apprentissages futurs.

May is Speech and Hearing Month!

At Timiskaming Speech and Language, we’re excited to kick off our “Did You Know?” series—sharing important facts about communication health throughout the month of May.

Did you know… 1 in 10 people has a communication disorder?

That means communication challenges—whether speaking, understanding, listening, or using voice—are more common than you might think. These disorders can affect people of all ages, from toddlers learning their first words to adults navigating new speech or language difficulties.

Stay tuned all month long as we raise awareness, share tips, and shine a light on the importance of early support and intervention. Let’s get people talking—because communication matters!

As Autism Awareness Month comes to a close, we’re proud to share our final post by celebrating communication in all its forms.

At Timiskaming Speech and Language, we recognize and support the incredible diversity of ways people communicate. One of the key services we offer is AAC—Augmentative and Alternative Communication—which provides a voice to those who may be minimally verbal or non-verbal, including many individuals with autism.

Did you know?

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior.
Neurodiversity is the idea that neurological differences—like autism—are natural variations of the human experience.
Many autistic children may develop speech later, communicate differently, or may not use spoken language at all.
AAC tools (like picture boards, speech-generating devices, and communication apps) help children express themselves, build relationships, and fully participate in their communities.
AAC doesn’t replace speech—it supports connection. Every child deserves a way to say what they feel, need, and dream.

Play isn't "just play" — it's how children explore their world, build relationships, and grow essential communication skills. Whether we're rolling a ball back and forth, pretending to be animals, or building a block tower together, every playful moment is an opportunity for engagement, connection, and learning.

💬 Through evidence-based approaches like JASPER, Floortime, Hanen More Than Words, and The Play Project, we follow each child's lead, respect their interests, and make therapy a joyful, meaningful experience.

This month and every month, we're proud to support neurodiverse children and their families with respectful, responsive, and playful therapy that meets them where they are. 💙

Thank you for tuning in to our Team Spotlight Series with Timiskaming Speech and Language! This is our final spotlight, and we’re wrapping up with our owner and founder of Timiskaming Speech and Language—Cindy Davis-Maille, .

With over 20 years of experience, Cindy has been dedicated to providing high-quality speech, language, literacy, swallowing, and autism services across Timiskaming and beyond. She founded Timiskaming Speech and Language to bridge the gap in care and ensure that individuals of all abilities receive the support they need to find their voice and reach their full potential.

Cindy holds advanced training in:
✅ Hanen Parent Programs for language development
✅ Oral motor speech disorders
✅ JASPER & Floortime therapy for neurodiverse children
✅ Social skills & literacy intervention
✅ AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) support

Recently, Cindy expanded her services to offer swallowing assessment and rehabilitation for adults, continuing her commitment to accessible and inclusive care.

Outside of work, Cindy is an active community member, volunteering with the Rotary Club of Kirkland Lake. She loves the great outdoors—whether it’s walking her dog, curling, golfing, or snowmobiling with her family, you’ll find her embracing all that Kirkland Lake has to offer!
