Mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum, it’s deeply tied to inequalities in our world – including the ongoing impacts of colonialism and systemic racism.

We know these inequities not only impact symptoms:

👉 32% of individuals from Black communities compared to 24% White counterparts reported to experience symptoms of anxiety
👉 Racial discrimination significantly predicts greater depressive symptoms

But they pose a barrier to accessing care, with:
👉 Black Canadians are 300% more likely than non-Black Canadians to go without needed mental health services due to systemic barriers, including a lack of culturally competent professionals

In honour of this year’s theme 30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow's Visionaries, we’re highlighting some of Canada’s prominent Black leaders in mental health whose work has been closing this gap.

Another Souper Star for our warming centre guests - Little Mushroom Catering provided an incredible carrot and white bean soup last night to help warm the bodies and hearts of folks coming in for a bite to eat, some Netflix shows, and a safe place to sleep.

We are so grateful for this community which continues to show up for our guests, helping us make this cold and snowy season a little warmer.

The warming centre, located at the front of our 298 Lawrence Avenue property in Kitchener, is open to anyone needing a warm place to spend the night. Open daily from 7 pm to 7am, we provide cots, shower facilities, and referrals to community supports.

Bus stops for routes 204, 20, 16, and 12 are close by.
