Thanks to Tara and the whole Community Support Connections team for their delivery of mushroom tarragon soup for this week's Warm Up Wednesday at our winter Warming Centre!

Community Support Connections not only delivers Meals on Wheels for seniors and people with disabilities across our community, but also makes each meal with care in their very own onsite kitchen. We're so grateful to them for being such great community partners!

If your food business is interested in helping warm hearts and bodies throughout this winter season - don't hesitate to reach out by DM or send an email to rhorne@thresholdssupports.ca to donate a warm pot of soup!

If you've been reading The Record, CBC, or Guelph Today this past week you may have heard about our latest milestone.

Last week, the land severance of the greenspace around our Hyland Road property was unanimously approved by the City of Guelph's committee of adjustment - meaning the property is officially split in two!

Now, we're one big step closer to a meaningful act of reconciliation: transferring the 11 acres of surplus greenspace around our new Guelph home to an Indigenous land trust, where it can benefit from the experience and teachings offered by Crow Shield Lodge, an Indigenous-led charity specializing in land stewardship, education, and healing.

From neighbours to community leaders from Wyndham House and the Guelph & Wellington Poverty Elimination Collaborative, we're so grateful to the Guelphites who came out to show their support!

We're so grateful to Walper Hotel's TWH Social for kicking off our first Warm Up Wednesday at our Warming Centre this week!

Their incredible donation of soup meant clients arrived to the delicious scent of roasted tomatoes and peppers, had a nutritious and filling meal before heading to bed for the night - and most importantly, felt cared for by their community.

Thanks to the whole team at The Walper Hotel and TWH Social Bar and Bistro for your kindness and leadership!

We're so grateful to all of the community members who joined us for our land clean-up this past week!

Together, we were able to restore balance to our excess greenspace around our Hyland property before it is returned to Indigenous community members and benefits from the land stewardship knowledge of the incredible team at Crow Shield Lodge

Thanks to everyone who came out in support - including students and staff from St. James Catholic High School, our friends at Wyndham House, Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre, Stonehenge Therapeutic Community Guelph Wellington OHT, and Guelph Police Service.

Lots of connections were made at this year's Indigenous Health Leaders Gathering, hosted by Ontario Health!

From hearing from countless Indigenous leaders about their programs to sharing what we're working on - like our partnership with Crow Shield Lodge to bring a land-based healing program to our transitional housing site in Guelph, or returning surplus greenspace around one of our properties to the Indigenous community - we were so glad for this opportunity to learn from one another.

We're so grateful to local news outlets helping share the word about our Warming Centre opening up for the season! The centre will offer folks who need a warm place to sleep a bed, shower facilities, nutritious meals, and referrals to community partners - and we could really use your help to support as many neighbours as possible.

This week has been all treats and no tricks at Thresholds Homes and Supports!

After our 2023 Sheldon build was named a finalist for not one, but two of the City of Kitchener Great Places Awards - we took home a trophy for the Affordable Housing Solutions Award!

Complete with 25 units, a modern community room, bike storage, and beautiful outdoor spaces, the sustainable build shows what we know to be true: that with thoughtful design, affordable housing can be beautiful and dignified.

Our sincere thanks to our incredible Sheldon Avenue staff, who help make this building a home every single day, and ABA Architects Inc, GSP Group, and MTE Consultants, who brought this vision to life.

For those who would like to help us build more housing just like this - we could use your support with our upcoming build at 667 Victoria Street South. Learn more here: https://ow.ly/nxHy50Xl7tW

Housing insecurity and increasing uncertainty for renters have a very real impact on those most vulnerable in our communities.

Over the weekend, multiple clients reached out distraught about the provincial government's new Bill 60. We've repeatedly heard that without affordable and supportive housing, they may not be here today.

As an affordable housing provider, we were deeply concerned to see many of the items included in this proposed legislation, which would introduce sweeping changes to residential tenancy laws that would further destabilize the housing sector, eliminate rent control, and, in turn, erode existing natural affordable housing.

While we are relieved that, yesterday, the government confirmed it will no longer move forward with eliminating ‘security of tenure’, many aspects of the bill that would reduce tenants’ rights remain.

We stand with tenants and call on all elected officials to take steps to better protect those in search of stable, permanent housing in the midst of concurrent housing and homelessness crises, and understand the real impacts of all proposed legislation.

The need for more affordable housing is clear - but we can’t do it alone.

Yesterday, our CEO Eric Philip joined other community leaders from YWCA KW and Waterloo Region Community Legal Services, as well as MPP Aislinn Clancy, and MPP Lee Fairclough for Etobicoke—Lakeshore at a press conference at the Queen’s Park Legislative Assembly of Ontario to call for action on the housing and homelessness crises.

We’ll continue to push to centre the voices of those with lived experience and increase investments into deeply affordable and supportive housing.
