Struggling with IBS and not sure which diet is right for you?

There’s a lot of advice out there — low FODMAP, low histamine, low nickel — and it can feel overwhelming to know where to start.
In our latest blog, Dr. Sanam breaks down these three common digestive health diets and explains who they’re for and how they work.

✔️ Low FODMAP: Helps reduce bloating, gas, and digestive discomfort by limiting fermentable carbohydrates that can trigger IBS symptoms.

✔️ Low Histamine: May help if your digestive symptoms come with headaches, flushing, or congestion after certain foods.

✔️ Low Nickel: An emerging approach that may benefit people with nickel sensitivity or persistent IBS symptoms.

There’s no one-size-fits-all IBS diet. The right approach depends on your symptoms, triggers, and underlying gut health.

IBS or IBD — what’s the difference? 👇
While both can cause digestive discomfort, they’re not the same.

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is a functional condition — meaning symptoms like bloating, gas, constipation, and diarrhea occur without visible inflammation or damage to the digestive tract.

IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) — including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis — involves chronic inflammation that can damage the gut and impact the whole body.

Symptoms that may point to IBD (not IBS):
• Fever
• Re**al bleeding
• Nocturnal diarrhea (waking up to go)
• Unintentional weight loss
• Persistent fatigue
• Signs of systemic inflammation (joint pain, skin issues, eye inflammation)
If you’re experiencing these symptoms, it’s important not to ignore them.

How naturopathic medicine can help manage IBD:
We take a whole-body approach to support you alongside conventional care:
• Reduce inflammation through personalized nutrition
• Support gut healing and the microbiome
• Address nutrient deficiencies (like iron, B12, vitamin D)
• Use evidence-based supplements to support remission
• Help regulate the immune system
• Support stress + the gut-brain connection

Feel Better - We Can Help! 💚

Worried you might have IBD?
You don’t have to navigate this alone.

Struggling with IBS symptoms, but tired of eliminating more and more foods?

You’re not alone. Many people with IBS end up on extremely restrictive diets — yet their symptoms still persist.
The truth is, IBS isn’t just about food. It’s often driven by deeper imbalances in the digestive system.

In our latest blog by registered functional nutritionist Holly Bradich explains how to manage IBS from a functional nutrition perspective that goes beyond simply cutting out your favourite foods.

She explores how addressing underlying issues can make a huge difference, including:

✔️Gut microbiome imbalances – when the balance of beneficial and harmful bacteria shifts, it can lead to bloating, gas, and digestive discomfort.

✔️The gut–brain connection – Stress and nervous system dysregulation can directly influence digestion and IBS flare-ups.

✔️Digestive dysfunction – low stomach acid or insufficient digestive enzymes or poor bile flow can prevent food from breaking down properly, contributing to symptoms.

By identifying and addressing these root causes, many people can improve IBS symptoms without living on a tiny list of “safe foods.”

You can still enjoying the foods you love, without suffering.

Bloated, belching, or feeling uncomfortable after eating? It could be FODMAPs.

FODMAPs are a group of short-chain carbohydrates found in many everyday foods (like certain fruits, dairy, wheat, onions, and legumes). The term stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols. These carbohydrates can be poorly absorbed in the small intestine, which means they travel to the large intestine where gut bacteria ferment them. This process can lead to gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, belching, and changes in bowel habits for some people.

A low FODMAP diet is a structured nutrition approach designed to reduce these fermentable carbohydrates temporarily in order to calm digestive symptoms.

It’s commonly recommended for people with digestive conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), where fermentation of these carbohydrates can worsen symptoms.

Many people notice significant improvement in bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain when the diet is implemented correctly.

However, the low FODMAP diet is not meant to be a lifelong diet—and it’s not a DIY plan. The process involves three important phases:
• Elimination of high-FODMAP foods for a short period
• Systematic reintroduction to identify your personal triggers
• Personalization so you can expand your diet while keeping symptoms under control

Without professional guidance, it’s easy to stay overly restricted or risk nutrient deficiencies. Working with a Registered Dietitian ensures the process is done safely, effectively, and in a way that supports long-term gut health.
