🐾 Easter Safety Tips for Pets 🐶🐱
Easter is a fun time, but some treats and decorations can be very dangerous for pets! Here’s what to watch out for:
🍫 Chocolate – Dogs and chocolate don’t mix! Dark or bitter chocolate (like baker’s or semi-sweet) is the most toxic. Even milk or white chocolate should be kept out of reach. Signs of ingestion: vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, agitation, increased thirst, elevated heart rate, or seizures.
⚠️ Xylitol – This artificial sweetener is found in candy, baked goods, and gum, and can be extremely toxic to dogs. Keep all sugary treats safely away.
🌸 Lilies – True lilies (Easter, Day, Stargazer, Asiatic) are highly toxic to cats. Ingestion can cause rapid kidney failure. If exposure occurs, seek immediate veterinary care and bring the plant with you.
🌼 Daffodils – Contain lycorine, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and in severe cases, cardiac or respiratory issues. Bulbs are especially dangerous.
🎀 Easter Grass – Cats are often curious about decorative Easter grass, but ingestion can cause dangerous intestinal blockages, sometimes requiring surgery. Watch for vomiting, constipation, or a painful abdomen.
If your pet ingests anything unusual or potentially harmful, please contact our hospital immediately. If we are closed, please call the Emergency Clinic of Waterloo Region at 519-650-1617.
