What Should I Avoid During Disc Recovery?

You’re doing the decompression. You’re committed to healing. But are your everyday habits helping — or holding you back?

During disc recovery, what you avoid is just as important as what you do.

Here’s what to steer clear of:

❌ Heavy lifting (especially awkward bending or twisting)
❌ Prolonged sitting without back support
❌ Sleeping on your stomach
❌ Skipping hydration or movement
❌ Overdoing exercise too soon

✅ Instead, walk regularly, stay hydrated, and follow your treatment plan closely.

Your body is doing the healing — protect that progress!

How Long Until I Feel Relief?

📄 This is one of the most common questions we get:
“How long will it take before I feel better?”

Everyone heals at their own pace, but here’s a general idea…

💠 Some people feel improvement after just 5 sessions.
💠 Most start noticing meaningful change by visit 10-15.
💠 Significant and lasting relief typically develops by visit 15–25.

Why does it vary? Because your injury, how long you’ve had it, your daily habits, and your lifestyle all affect your healing timeline.

The SpineMed decompression process is gentle, gradual, and safe. Think of it as slowly restoring life to an injured disc — not a quick fix, but a lasting one.

We're with you every step of the way.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

One of the most common questions we hear is,
“How many visits will it take before I’m better?”

The truth is — it's not possible to know for sure. But here’s what we look at:

🔹 Severity and age of the disc injury
🔹 Presence of nerve involvement (like sciatica)
🔹 Your lifestyle, job, and stress on the spine
🔹 How you respond to early sessions

A typical plan includes 25 decompression visits, usually spaced over 4-8 weeks. Some feel relief sooner, others need longer to stabilize and strengthen.

NOTE: That there is a big difference between the following two questions:
How many sessions do I need to feel better
vs
How many sessions do I need to have my disc injury healed with significant decrease chance of recurring symptoms.

In the first question - most feel significant improvement at around the 15 visit mark.
But this does not mean the disc is healed, and flareups won't return.

Research and clinical experience has shown that for 93% of people to get long lasting relief, 25 sessions are needed - sometimes more in complicated cases.
Even once the 25 sessions are over - disc healing continues for the next several months after treatment is over. So care must be taken during this time to minimise relapses, and strengthen the back.

At Disc Repair Clinic, our objective is longlasting results.

Why Doesn’t Everyone Get Results From Decompression?

Here’s the truth: spinal decompression therapy works — but not in every case. So what makes the difference?

Here are the biggest factors that determine success:

✔️ A correct diagnosis — Are we treating the right problem?
✔️ Consistency — Missing sessions slows momentum
✔️ Movement habits — Are you moving the way your spine needs to heal?
✔️ Patient involvement — Healing isn’t passive
✔️ Communication — We adapt your care plan based on how your body responds

There is more to healing than just spinal decompression. Time is a factor, yes. But it is critical to pin point the cause behind the disc injury so that the habits that caused it are changed - otherwise full healing will never occur.

At Disc Repair Clinic, we don’t just “do decompression.” We teach you how to support your spine between visits so your results stick.

Do I Need an MRI First?

Great question — and the answer is: not always.

At Disc Repair Clinic, we do a full assessment first. That includes orthopedic testing, postural scans, neurological checks, and a review of your health history.

📌 If MRI's were easy and quick to get in Ontario, it would be great to have it on every patient before getting on the Spinal Decompression table. However, this is not the case. We have had many patients who did not want to wait several months for the MRI scan before starting care, because they were in too much pain, and couldn't get more than 30minutes of sleep at a time.

---
We do however need a recent Spinal Xray of your spine before commencing, and this can be ordered by us - and is covered by OHIP.
---

📌 But many disc injuries can be accurately assessed through clinical exams and confirmed as you begin treatment.
📌 MRIs can be helpful, but they’re not always necessary upfront.

At Disc Repair Clinic, here’s how we ensure your comfort and safety:

✅ We use the SpineMed Table — computer-guided, non-invasive, and precise
✅ No jerking, pulling, or twisting — just controlled motion

Is It Okay to Exercise During Decompression Therapy?

Yes — with the right kind of movement, exercise can actually support your spinal healing.

Here’s what we recommend during your decompression plan:

✅ Walking (daily, short frequent walks)
✅ Gentle stretching (guided by your provider) *note, certain stretches must be avoided.
✅ Postural breathing and core activation
✅ Mobility exercises for hips and mid-back

What to avoid:

❌ Heavy lifting
❌ High-impact movements
❌ Twisting under load
❌ Sit-ups or deep spinal flexion

Think of decompression as helping your spine "breathe." Your movement habits should match that goal — light, controlled, and healing-focused 💪

Ask us about what exercises are safe for your specific case!
