That’s an expensive rescue…
🆕 UPDATE: 23 People Rescued from Ice Near Owen Sound
We now have an update on the large ice rescue operation that took place earlier today along Georgian Bay just north of Owen Sound.
According to the Ontario Provincial Police, officers with Grey Bruce OPP along with several emergency partners and Ontario Provincial Police Aviation Services successfully rescued 23 individuals after the ice they were standing on broke away from the shoreline near Cobble Beach.
Police say winds and currents pushed the ice shelf roughly two kilometres away from shore, leaving the group stranded on drifting ice in Georgian Bay.
Two OPP helicopters were deployed and were able to airlift all 23 people to safety. Officials say the situation became life threatening for several individuals due to hypothermia, but thankfully everyone is expected to make a full recovery.
The OPP also thanked Cobble Beach Golf Course for allowing the use of their property to help support the rescue operation.
This incident serves as an important reminder that ice conditions can change quickly, especially during periods of warmer temperatures and shifting winds. Even ice that appears solid can break away from shore and drift out into open water.
A huge thank you to all of the emergency crews involved for their quick response and teamwork that helped bring everyone home safely. ❤️
