Have you ever experienced a ‘pulled’ muscle when you were doing an exercise or playing a sport?

Are you the type of person to just ice it and hope it gets better?

Have you found that recovering from these ‘pulled’ muscles seems to take longer than it used to?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you’re in the right place! A ‘pulled’ muscle is what we physiotherapists call a muscle strain, and today we’re going to talk about how physiotherapy helps you recover from muscle strains faster than the typical ice and rest method.
In fact, we’ll go through the exact treatment that I use with my clients to get them back to doing what they love as soon as possible!

Physiotherapy helps you recover from muscle strains faster than the typical ice and rest method. A muscle strain occurs when a muscle is overexerted

Getting a new knee may seem straightforward: take old knee out; put new knee in. Done. Sometimes, it’s nice to think about how much easier some aspects of being a human would be if we were like cars. Mechanical in nature. Easily modifiable. 👩‍🔧

Part not working? Great, replace it, and function better than ever before!

Unfortunately (but, really, extremely “fortunately”), we’re biological in nature. That is, humans (and their parts) are living, breathing, entities that mold, change, grow, and vary based on the demands they’re faced with. 🌳

Are the demands placed on the body slow, progressive, purposeful, and goal driven (think Olympic athlete training for their sport)? If yes, the body will slowly, progressively, and purposefully adapt to accomplish the goals it sets out to accomplish. Has the body been dealing with pain, and poor function for weeks, months, years? If yes, the body will likely adopt compensatory mechanisms – like limping for example. Maybe pain and dysfunction have been so high that activity is highly limited – so we sit and rest – we do nothing. Doing nothing = no demand; and no demand = no improvement (and maybe even some loss of abilities we once had).

It’s not all bad of course! Like I said, the body is biological, and it will adapt. It just needs to learn the optimal environment for doing so. That’s where we come in. Physiotherapists are experts at helping you teach your body how to optimally adapt to its imposed demands. 👩‍⚕️

Therefore, getting a knee replacement may replace the “faulty” part, but it’s really just the beginning. This blog will help you understand why physiotherapy is important after a knee replacement (and no, learning optimal loading is not the only reason – but it’s a great place to start!).

Gain optimal strength, range of motion and balance with physiotherapy after your knee replacement. Replacing the "faulty" part is just the beginning.

Going into any surgery can be scary, and there are always lots of things to consider. Feeling prepared when you walk in is nice, but wouldn’t it be even nicer if you could walk in AND out feeling completely prepared for your recovery and future?

We’ve had the pleasure of working alongside a shoulder surgeon, and we have therefore treated our fair share of people who have undergone a rotator cuff surgery.

How do you know if you need rotator cuff surgery?
You need rotator cuff surgery if the following things are true (typically):
1. You have significant shoulder pain that is greatly limiting your ability to complete your activities of daily living (i.e. get dressed, sleep, work)
2. You have imaging results (i.e. an MRI) that show rotator cuff damage (and this damage is ‘fixable’ with surgery)
3. You have tried to reduce your pain and improve your function through virtually every other conservative option, including a significant bout of physical therapy

You need rotator cuff surgery if: you have significant shoulder pain, imaging results, and have tried everything else already.

You know the feeling when you finally get into a good running routine? That feeling when you’re consistently making progress and developing a true passion for running?

Then one day, out of nowhere, you start to feel this pain in your leg. You brush it off and just keep running, hoping it will go away on its own.

But as the training days go by, the pain only gets worse.

Eventually it gets to the point where the pain is so bad you have to stop running. You rest for a few days, or maybe even a few weeks, to let your body heal. Once you feel pretty good, you start running again, only to feel the same pain come back!
What the heck!? What could be causing this and why didn’t it heal even after you took a break from running?

If any part of this story sounds like you, then you’ve found yourself in the right place. We share why this happens all too often, and 3 proven ways that will help you prevent and heal running injuries.

Most running injuries are overuse injuries, meaning too much stress is being placed on a particular body part without enough time for recovery

For anyone who has tried to do a yoga class and has found their wrists to be their weakest point, this blog is for you!
I will teach you how to work your way into more weight-bearing on your hands and wrists in a comfortable way.

I used to struggle with a full yoga class because there was just SO MUCH weight-bearing through your hands and wrists, and my wrists were not used to that. So when I made a goal last year to train myself to be able to do a handstand, my biggest concern was not my core strength, or my shoulder strength, or my sense of balance when upside down… my biggest challenge was going to be “Will my wrists still be in one piece if I start this training?”

1 year later, and a somewhat impressive (if I do say so myself) 3 second freestanding handstand later, and my wrists are stronger than ever and haven’t been a concern of mine in months.

Our Story

Strive Physiotherapy & Performance began as a dream idea discussed between two friends who were frustrated with the health industry. In short, the dream was to be in a clinic where there was ongoing education, a positive and familial atmosphere, and clinicians dedicated to customer service and quality of care instead of numbers.

After taking a leap of faith and starting Strive Physiotherapy & Performance, Mike began as the only person working in our entire clinic. No front desk staff, no RMT, no physiotherapy assistant... and no on site laundry machines! (That’s right, he would run the laundry back and forth from his house between clients).

In 2018 we celebrated our 3rd birthday. We are now 3 physiotherapists, 2 RMTs and 3 office administrators... and adding more! We pride ourselves in our thorough, one-on-one care. That means no assistants sitting with you after seeing the physiotherapist for 5 minutes, no continually changing staff. You will be seen by the same physiotherapist for your entire appointment, every time. We help each client understand their injury, work towards recovery, and build strength and the confidence to reduce the risk of future injury.

Each of us loves our job, and we look forward to coming to work every day. Seriously! It’s hard to dread Mondays when you love what you do. We look forward to seeing each of our clients, and guiding them through their recovery.
