Are You Cleaning Your Eyelids? (You Should Be.)

Most people wash their face… but skip their eyelids. And that’s exactly where problems start.

Your lids and lashes collect oil, bacteria, makeup residue, dead skin, and debris every single day. When they aren’t cleaned properly, those build up and lead to:
➕Dry, irritated eyes
➕Styes and chalazia
➕Blocked meibomian glands (MGD)
➕Redness and inflammation
➕Flakes on the lash line
➕Worsening of rosacea-related eye symptoms

Healthy eyes depend on clean lids. When the glands along the lash line get clogged, your tears evaporate faster and your eyes become dry, gritty, and uncomfortable.

A proper lid-hygiene routine can make a bigger difference than most people realize. Daily cleansing = fewer flare-ups, better comfort, better tear quality, and healthier lashes.

What should you use?
A medical-grade lid cleanser or wipes (not baby shampoo). And if buildup is already causing issues, professional in-office treatments like ZEST lid debridement can help reset the system.

If you’re noticing irritation, morning dryness, or recurring styes, your lids are likely the culprit.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Andrew Maass back to Komoka Optometry!

For those who’ve been with us since the early days—you may remember him. Dr. Maass actually worked with us as an assistant when we first opened, before heading off to optometry school. Now he’s come full circle as our newest optometrist, and we couldn’t be prouder.

Born and raised in London, Dr. Maass completed his Doctor of Optometry and Bachelor of Vision Science at Nova Southeastern University with Honours Society distinction. His clinical journey took him across North America—from hospital-based care in Bethel, Alaska, to co-managing glaucoma and cataract surgery alongside ophthalmologists in South Florida. He also brings experience in pediatrics, binocular vision, primary care, and specialty contact lenses (including fittings for keratoconus).

He has a special interest in ocular disease, myopia management, and specialty contact lenses, and is dedicated to giving every patient thorough, personalized care.

When he’s not in the clinic, you’ll find him playing hockey, cheering on the Leafs, golfing, traveling, or unwinding at the cottage with family.
