➡ PNF Stretching

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, or PNF stretching, is a technique utilized by physiotherapists.

This stretch starts with a passive stretch but adds in a contraction of the target muscle, usually against a small amount of resistance for a short amount of time. This is then followed by relaxing back into passive stretch again.

It is common to have questions about your first physical therapy session!

What to expect?

- First you will discuss your main concerns with your physio, as well as your medical history and current lifestyle.

- Then you will partake in a physical assessment that often looks at movement, strength, and functional tests.

- The assessment findings will be reviewed with you as well as your treatment plan!

- Treatment: may include a variety of things such as exercise, manual therapy, or use of modalities such as dry needling, myofascial cupping, ultrasound, etc.

What to wear?
Comfortable, loose fitting clothing that allows for movement and easy access to the area being treated. There is a bathroom available should you need to bring a change of clothes.

Frequency?
After your assessment your therapist will be better equipped to give you a recommended timeline for your treatment.

This first appointment is the perfect time to ask any other questions you may have regarding your injury and further treatment!

▪Static Stretching ▪ involves moving the target muscle into it’s elongated (stretched) state and holding that position for a sustained period of time.

It is often best to do static stretches at the end of your workout when your muscles are warm and limber.

Reminder to keep your texting ( or scrolling 🧐) posture in check: elbows relaxed at your sides, wrists neutral (not bent!), and phone lifted to eye level so your upper body stays tall. Small tweaks = big relief!
