What is a SUBLUXATION?
Medically- a subluxation defines as less that (sub) a dislocation (luxation). This translates to joint that is moving less than optimally. This is the medical indication for an adjustment- to get the joint moving better. But to me, it’s much more than that. The Latin translation of subluxation is LESS THAN (sub) LIGHT (lux). Something that causes a dampening in the human potential, a disconnect in the brain body connection, a restriction of the innate intelligence that governs every cell and organ in our body.
Generally this is some form of a trauma or stress - physical, chemical or emotional. Something that happened or is happening to you that has taken you off course from being fully aligned with who you are able to be. Removing this subluxation can sometimes be as simple as performing an adjustment to the spine- restoring spinal function can improve the brains ability to connect with the body. If the brain can see the body, it should be able to heal it. If it doesn’t, more questions should be asked. Is the body appropriately nourished? Is it already fighting a constant battle of toxic overload that has depleted it’s healing resources? Is your nervous system in a constant sympathetic (fight or flight) state, and unable to return to a parasympathetic state where we heal? If so, why? And what can we do to change that tone? Once we start asking those questions and you start answering them, then the healing process can truly begin.

My goal is to help you ask the right questions and provide you the space to answer . This is a patient centered process- you are in charge of it. My job is to educate about the body in a salutogenic manner, and once YOU see the changes needed, to help you find implementable action steps that will help you reach your true potential.

You are the guide. I’m just along for the ride. You want a quick fix and a back crack cause you know it feels good, I got ya. You want more? Start asking the questions.

Chiropractic adjustments improve your brain-body connection. This includes proprioception (awareness of position in space) which directly impacts balance and performance, and interoception (awareness of your inner body) which has many implications for overall health. The more connected you are with your body, the better you will perform and the healthier you will be.

“Many studies have shown that spinal dysfunction appears to alter the accuracy of the brains internal maps about what is occurring, both inside the body and the world around it, and that chiropractic adjustments appear to significantly improve this.” H. Haavik. The contemporary understanding of the chiropractic subluxation. Pediatric chiropractic 3rd edition.

tried nordic skiing today for the first time and was a big fan. low impact way to get in a strenuous cardiovascular workout plus a great way to focus on hip & lower extremity alignment, as any foot flair significantly decreases efficiency. bonus that it’s a beautiful way to enjoy the outdoors during these gray winter months. At sovereign lake/silver star for $63 you can rent all the equipment for one adult plus a pull trailer for half a day of fun with the family. this is how I plan on getting myself and the boys used to controlling skis before we transition to downhill.

“Altered knee motion is one of the most common gait deviations in pediatric populations with gait disorders. The anatomical and functional aspects of the knee are perhaps why some have described the knee, as a “bad neighbor.” To be clear, the knee can be the source of pain as well as the primary cause of biomechanical dysfunction; however, the contribution or lack of motion at the ankle mortise joint, femoral acetabular joint, and or lumbar subluxations cannot be overstated as primary sources of knee dysfunction. The knee can be thought of as a proverbial “catch 22” for it is literally stuck between a rock (the ground) and a hard place (any potentially subluxated proximal joint)” K. Ernst et al, Examination and specific adjustments of the extremities. Pediatric chiropractic 3rd edition.

“this is your knee.” two weight bearing bones, a non weight bearing bone that acts as a fulcrum to increase mechanical resistance of your quad, and a non weight bearing bone that has little impact on knee function but mostly impacts your ankle movement.
Many insidious knee problems (that came on without cause) are actually the result of dysfunction above the knee:
dysfunctional hip mobility placing uneven load transference at the joint, muscle tightness causing excess tension loading or poor neurological control from the lumbar spine causing poor mechanics at the knee joint,
Or from below the knee: poor ankle mobility causing excess mobility at the knee to accommodate, or weak foot shock absorption causing excess gravitational stresses to the knee joint.
Traumatic knee injuries almost always result it instability due to the necessary soft tissue support of the joint. And once the joint has healed from the trauma, there’s often significant fear of reoccurrence. This can cause significant muscle guarding that can persist even after the original injury heals, often resulting in pain and dysfunction.
Essentially, if you have a knee injury, you need to make sure you are working on your ankle, hip and low back as well as the knee.

one leg stands every chance ya get. my favorite way to train stabilizing muscles of ankle and knee. the more uneven the situation the more challenging. sometimes for a real riot I close my eyes. this is a super easy way to improve your overall health and prevent future injuries, all it takes is a bit of intention.

My family and I are healthy, why should we consider going to the chiropractor?
Wellness visits include full assessment of spinal joints and often end range loading of extremity joints- what does that mean? We take each joint into ranges of motion that it doesn’t normally go through on a daily basis and gently stretch the connective tissue that is shortened. Most often the joint will release with gentle tension, but if not we will do a small adjustment to ensure it maintains its optimal range of motion. This provides your brain with great sensory feedback for the positioning of your body in space. Your chiropractor is also a great resource for information about how to optimize your family’s overall health and well-being.

chilly morning for a swim. I cannot emphasize how much I dreaded this plunge. I’ve been feeling extra chilled since the weather dropped the last week and getting even colder was not at all appealing! but the harder it is, the bigger the reward, and I’ve felt great since. funny how freezing yourself for 5 min can make you feel less cold for the rest of the day.
I am so grateful to live in a community with like minded people. every Saturday at 9 am there is a group that meets at pebble beach to plunge in lake okanagan. it’s a great way to do it with support, and for help doing it safely. if thinking of jumping in cold water makes you think “I’d die.” you might not be wrong. thermal shock does not come without risk. it can be a massive shock to your cardiovascular system if your body is not well, but if done safely it can be enormously beneficial for the same system. if you want to change the feeling that your body isn’t strong enough to withstand the shock, I recommend easing into it. If you’re interested in learning more about the benefits or risks of ice plunging, please send me a DM and I’d be happy to chat.
