Kotor, Montenegro
Located next to Croatia, Montenegro is a paradise in itself.
Montenegro is a country with rugged mountains, medieval villages and a narrow strip of beaches along its Adriatic coastline.
The Bay of Kotor feels like sailing along a fjord, dotted with coastal churches and fortified towns like Kotor and Herceg Novi.
Durmitor National Park is home to bears and wolves, encompasses limestone peaks, glacial lakes and 1,300m-deep Tara River Canyon.
The weather is warm and balmy, palm trees sway in the breeze. The town of Kotor is a medieval fortress filled with adorable little cafes and restaurants, curiosity shops and souvenirs. It is a stunning maze of cobblestone streets and hallways, easy to get turned around.
And if you know the right way, you can climb the city walls to the fortress of St. Johns. High above the town, the city walls represent a mix of ramparts, gates, churches and fortresses. Their construction started in the 9th century and in the 15th century they finally formed a full loop up into the hillside, 4.5 km long. During the day time it is not easy to see the difference between the grey stones of the walls and the greyish rocks of the surrounding mountains, but at night the walls are illuminated and then Kotor looks like a fairy tale!
After returning from the hike I always love to reward myself with a creamy cappuccino and a small bite to eat.
Go on.... be adventurous..... plan your next trip to a new destination :)
