This picture of our beautiful flag at half mast and the cenotaph near my house.
There is no beauty in war. There is beauty in us gathering in community to remember those who served and fought, came home changed, physically, mentally, emotionally, or paid the ultimate sacrifice, for us to live with the freedoms we have today.
My guess is those soldiers were grateful for any moment of beauty that crossed their paths during deployment and the ugliness of war. A glimpse of something beautiful has the power to lighten our hearts, even if just for a moment. It gives us a reason to keep going, to keep fighting.
As time marches on we become distanced from the horrors of WW I & WW II, our children are unlikely to personally know anyone who fought in these wars. We can’t allow what happened, the events that lead to them, the atrocities that occurred during them, be forgotten, for that is when history is doomed to repeat itself.
Spend a moment remembering today. Give thanks for the beauty, abundance & freedoms we have today because someone fought for us to have them. Find something beautiful in your day and acknowledge it for someone who is no longer here to see it.
Lest we forget. And thank you to every soldier, past and present. 🙏
