⚖️ Understanding Cannabis Ratios

When exploring medical cannabis, you may come across products labeled with ratios like 1:1, 2:1, or 10:1 — but what do these cannabis ratios actually mean?

A cannabis ratio refers to the balance of cannabinoids, primarily THC and CBD, in a product. This balance can influence how it feels and functions in the body.

Here’s a simple breakdown:

• Higher THC ratios (e.g., 10:1 THC:CBD) may produce stronger psychoactive effects and are often used for certain symptoms under medical guidance.
• Balanced ratios (e.g., 1:1) contain equal parts THC and CBD and may provide more moderate, well-rounded effects.
• Higher CBD ratios (e.g., 1:10 THC:CBD) are typically less intoxicating and may be preferred by patients looking to minimize THC-related effects.

Choosing the right ratio depends on your symptoms, goals, and individual response to cannabinoids.

That’s why working with a clinician is important — medical cannabis is not one-size-fits-all.

🌿 Why Fiber Is Essential for Overall Health

Fiber is an important part of a healthy diet, yet many people don’t get enough of it. This plant-based nutrient plays a key role in supporting several aspects of overall wellness.

Here’s why fiber matters:

🥦 Supports digestion – Fiber helps keep your digestive system moving and promotes regular bowel movements.

🦠 Supports gut health – It feeds beneficial gut bacteria that play a role in digestion, immunity, and overall health.

❤️ Supports heart health – Diets rich in fiber have been associated with improved cholesterol levels.

🍽 Helps with fullness – Fiber-rich foods can help you feel satisfied longer after meals.
Some great sources of fiber include whole grains, beans, lentils, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.

Small dietary changes—like adding more plant-based foods—can make a big difference in supporting your long-term health.

✨ Wellness starts with the habits we practice every day.

😴 Sleep Awareness Month: Let’s Talk About Better Sleep

March is Sleep Awareness Month, a reminder that quality sleep is essential for overall health. Sleep supports everything from mental wellbeing and memory to immune function and energy levels—yet many people struggle with sleep disturbances.

For some patients, medical cannabis may be explored as part of a personalized approach to improving sleep.

Research and patient reports suggest cannabinoids may help support individuals experiencing certain sleep-related challenges, including:

• Insomnia – difficulty falling or staying asleep
• Chronic pain–related sleep disruption
• PTSD-related sleep disturbances and nightmares
• Anxiety that interferes with falling asleep
• Restless or fragmented sleep

Some patients report benefits such as:

• Falling asleep more easily
• Fewer nighttime awakenings
• Improved overall sleep quality
• Feeling more rested the next day

Because every patient responds differently to cannabinoids, working with a clinician is important to determine the right product type, cannabinoid profile, and dosing strategy.

🌿 Struggling with sleep? You’re not alone. Greenleaf physicians provide personalized guidance and ongoing support for patients exploring medical cannabis as part of their treatment plan.

📊 New Study: Cannabis Use Linked to Reductions in Anxiety

A recent study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health examined how daily cannabis use may affect anxiety levels.

Researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder followed 345 adults over 30 days, tracking their cannabis use and anxiety levels. Participants used either THC-dominant, CBD-dominant, or balanced THC/CBD products purchased from legal dispensaries.

Key findings:

• Participants across all groups reported significant reductions in anxiety during the study.
• Those using CBD-dominant products experienced the most consistent improvements from day 1 to day 30.
• Researchers concluded that cannabis use was associated with short-term decreases in anxiety, particularly with CBD-focused products.

These findings add to a growing body of research exploring how cannabinoids may support individuals managing anxiety symptoms.

🩺 Medical Cannabis & Diabetes: What Does the Research Say?

Diabetes affects millions of people worldwide, and researchers are increasingly exploring whether cannabinoids may play a role in managing certain diabetes-related symptoms and complications.

Some studies suggest cannabis may influence processes involved in inflammation, metabolism, and nerve function—all of which can be relevant for people living with diabetes.

Researchers have also investigated cannabinoids for their potential role in managing symptoms such as:

• Neuropathic pain (nerve pain associated with diabetes)
• Sleep disturbances
• Inflammation
• Appetite and metabolism

While research in this area is still evolving, cannabinoids are being studied for their potential to support symptom management in people living with chronic conditions like diabetes.

It’s important to remember that medical cannabis is not a cure for diabetes, and anyone considering it should speak with a qualified healthcare professional to determine whether it may be appropriate as part of their treatment plan.

💨 Vaporizing Cannabis vs Smoking: What’s the Difference?

As cannabis consumption evolves, many people are exploring vaporization as a cleaner alternative to smoking.

Unlike smoking, which burns plant material, vaporization gently heats dried cannabis flower to release cannabinoids and other active compounds without combustion.
When cannabis is smoked, combustion produces harmful byproducts like carbon monoxide, tar, and other toxins.

Vaporization typically heats cannabis to temperatures between 180–220°C, allowing cannabinoids to be inhaled while avoiding many of these harmful substances.
Research has increasingly supported vaporization as a potentially safer inhalation method:

• Studies suggest vaporization can significantly reduce exposure to harmful combustion byproducts while still delivering cannabinoids effectively.
• Research has found lower respiratory risks associated with vaporizing cannabis compared to smoking.
• Some studies also suggest cannabis smoke may contribute to greater cardiovascular strain, while vaporization has a less pronounced effect.

Another benefit of vaporization is greater control over your experience. Different temperatures release different cannabinoids and compounds:

🔥 Lower temperatures (160–180°C) may preserve more delicate cannabinoids and produce a clearer experience.

🔥 Moderate temperatures (185–200°C) often release THC efficiently and provide balanced effects.

🔥 Higher temperatures (200–220°C) can produce stronger, more sedative effects.

Because vaporization delivers cannabinoids quickly, inhaled cannabis may be useful for rapid symptom relief or intermittent use, such as breakthrough symptoms or sleep support.

While vaporization is considered a safer alternative to smoking, it may not be appropriate for everyone—particularly individuals with respiratory conditions—and device quality and cannabis composition can influence the experience.

💧Wellness Wednesday: Kidney Health Tips

March is Kidney Health Month, a great reminder to take steps to protect these essential organs. Your kidneys work hard every day to filter waste, balance fluids, and support overall health.

Here are a few simple habits that can help support kidney health:

💦 Stay hydrated – Drinking enough water helps your kidneys remove waste from the body.

🥗 Eat a balanced diet – Focus on whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and limiting excess sodium.

🏃 Stay active – Regular physical activity supports blood pressure and overall health.

🩺 Monitor blood pressure and blood sugar – High blood pressure and diabetes are leading causes of kidney disease.

🚭 Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol – These can strain kidney function over time.

Small lifestyle changes can make a big difference in long-term kidney health.

⚠️ Signs Your Cannabis Dose Might Be Too High

Finding the right cannabis dose can take time. Everyone responds differently, which is why dosing adjustments are a normal part of medical cannabis treatment.

Signs your dose may be too high can include:

• Excessive drowsiness or sedation
• Anxiety or restlessness
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Difficulty concentrating or “brain fog”
• Daytime fatigue

This is one of the reasons follow-up appointments are so important. These visits allow your care team to review how your treatment is working, adjust your dosage if needed, and ensure you’re getting the most benefit from your medical cannabis.

🧠 New Research: Cannabis Extracts May Help Reduce Myofascial Pain

A recent clinical trial out of Brazil found that cannabis extracts containing equal amounts of THC and CBD significantly reduced myofascial pain in patients with Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)—a condition that affects the jaw and can cause chronic facial pain.

📊 Key findings:

• Participants experienced nearly a 4-point reduction in pain (on a 0–10 scale)
• Improvements were also seen in jaw movement and function
• Researchers described the results as a “robust analgesic effect” across all outcomes measured

Patients gradually increased their dose over several weeks, reaching 10 mg/day of the THC/CBD extract, and reported meaningful improvements compared to placebo.

💡 Researchers say these findings highlight the clinical potential of cannabinoids as a therapeutic option for managing TMD-related pain.

While larger studies are still needed, the results add to growing evidence supporting cannabinoid-based therapies for chronic pain conditions.

🌿 What is the “Entourage Effect”?

The entourage effect is the idea that the compounds found in cannabis — including cannabinoids like THC and CBD, along with terpenes and other plant compounds — may work better together than they do individually.

Rather than a single compound doing all the work, these components may interact within the body to create a more balanced and potentially more effective therapeutic effect.

For some patients, this is why full-spectrum or whole-plant cannabis products are often explored as part of a treatment plan.

Research into the entourage effect is ongoing, but it continues to shape how physicians and patients think about personalized medical cannabis care.

💜 March is Epilepsy Awareness Month in Canada

More than 360,000 Canadians are living with epilepsy, a neurological condition that causes recurring seizures and can significantly impact quality of life.

For some patients, conventional anti-seizure medications don’t provide enough relief. Emerging research suggests that medical cannabis — particularly cannabinoid-based treatments like CBD — may help reduce seizure frequency for certain individuals when used under medical guidance.

In some clinical observations, patients with drug-resistant epilepsy experienced extended periods of seizure freedom after using cannabis-based extracts, highlighting the growing interest in cannabinoid therapies for seizure management.

At Greenleaf, our goal is to help patients explore safe, physician-guided medical cannabis options that may support their health and quality of life.

💜 If you or someone you love is living with epilepsy, you may be eligible for medical cannabis treatment.

About Us

The Greenleaf Medical Clinic was founded in 2011 and assesses patients across Canada for their eligibility into Health Canada's Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) program.

The ACMPR provides a legal framework for patients to legally use ma*****na for beneficial relief of various symptoms.

Our physician's role is to assess patient eligibility through chart review and/or discussions with the patients' primary care physician or specialist(s). When deemed eligible, an appointment is scheduled for either an on-site consultation or a tele-medicine appointment through VSee. Tele-medicine consultations accommodate patients that cannot travel to our clinic due to illness or distance. Tele-Medicine allows patients across the country to benefit from our services that are otherwise unavailable. In either case, the physician will complete the required medical document authorizing the patient to use cannabis as medicine.

Following the patient/physician consultation, the patient will work with one of the clinic's medical office assistants to decide on the licensed commercial producer that best suits their requirements. Strains will be recommended as per the physicians chart notes and past patient experiences.
