Like all our emotions, happiness is fleeting. It leaves and returns over and over. A truly fulfilled life is rich with a variety of emotions—good, bad, and everything in between.

We commonly conflate good with pleasurable. So, when we make a “good” choice we expect it will feel enjoyable. But, sometimes good decisions are hard work, or accompanied by complex layers of emotions (even fear or sadness). Goodness is more than superficial pleasure. It can be pleasurable, of course! It it often has much more depth and richness to it than joy alone.

A sense of satisfaction and fulfillment in life comes from our choice to engage, rather than withdraw. The more we face things head on—even the hard things—the more alive we feel.

When we say we want to feel more alive, or more engaged with life, we have a tendency to think only of the positive emotions (joy, excitement, etc.). But the more we engage with life, the more we feel EVERYTHING. We cannot turn up one emotion, and down others. We can turn all the feelings up or down together. The question is not “Which emotion do you want to feel more of in your life?” The real question is “Do you want to feel more or less?”

We often say things like “I want to be happy” or “I want to live a happy life.” Sounds simple and reasonable on the surface, but the truth is that happiness is an emotion, not a state of being. And, our emotions are transient. We cannot feel happy all the time because our emotions are constantly shifting and sharing the stage with each other. They are an ensamble case. And only together can the offer us a truly rich and fulfilling experience of life.

When we have the space, protection, and support we need to accept (or endure) our circumstances, we are able to engage with life more fully.

You can do this alone in your room, in line at the grocery store, in the middle of a crowded movie theatre, etc. Taking a moment to refocus on the real and tangible present moment can be steadying and anchoring, and helpful in beginning to calm our anxiety.

Anxiety is a full-body reaction to a perceived threat. Anxiety lives in our body. Anxiety is so much more than just our thoughts.

Anxiety is an indicator of a perceived lack of safety. This could be real, or it could be a misconception. Either way, we feel it! Our foundation has been shaken, or maybe even ripped right out from under us. We feel as though there is nowhere solid for us to land.
