You are monitored by an exercise specialist who has worked as a Kinesiologist with over 10 years' experience working with Cardiac patients. She graduated from the University of Windsor with a degree in Human Kinetics-Movement Science. The Exercise Specialist is there to provide support, direction and encouragement.

I unfortunately had to put my Health Track Exercise program on hold. My Mom fell and broke her hip a couple weeks ago and have been busy helping. Let that be motivation to keep up your well rounded exercise regime!! A routine complete with aerobic endurance, balance, resistance training and flexibility!! On a positive note...her Physiotherapist has said that she has great mobility and flexibility!! She is 9 days post hip replacement surgery!! I like to think that her attending my exercise class for over 10 years helped prevent her hip injury from being worse!!! Happy exercising and I look forward to helping you keep track of your health in the near future!!!

Weight Managment Strategies: Dieting alone is ineffective in LONG TERM weight managment. You need to consider *food nutrient content * timing of consumption * type and quantity of energy expenditure * lifestyle behaviors

When these are employed in a unified manner, far more efficious than when employed independently!

A common theme among aerobic exercisers is they do not lose weight; same is true for resistance exercisers. Many expect participation to be adequate for desired outcome. The INTENSITY of exercise is the most important variable. For your exercise plan to yield the greatest contribution to a negative caloric balance, focus should be on doing the maximum amount of work in the alotted time! It is a great idea to combine resistance training AND aerobic activity! I teach a class for seniors that focuses on both aerobic and resistance training. It is a routine that can be done at their own pace. All muscle groups are targeted and their trainer strongly believes that improvements can be made at any age! We pack a LOT in a small amount of time!!

Dieting alone is ineffective for long term weight management. You need to consider food nutrient content, timing & type of energy input and type & timing of physical activity.
Exercise intensity is one of the most important variables! Focus should be on doing the maximum amount of work in alotted time. Aim for combination of resistance training and aerobic activity.
There is a free app called Cronometer.com that tracks your food intake. ( also nutrient content of food) There is a feature that will sync to your watch to monitor activity=calories burned.
Want long term results? Need healthy diet and exercise with a healthy dose of physical activity. Physical activity=park further away, take the stairs and just getting up and moving!!

Cronometer encourages you to not just count your calories but to focus on your nutrition as a whole through accurate and comprehensive data.

When older adults perform routine power and strength training activities, both their total movement and movement speed improve. Health Track exercise program incorporates both these activities which makes daily activities a piece of cake!

A recent study shows that exercise helps slow down progression of alzheimers. (At least 4 days/ week).

Did you know that 80% of adults do not perform enough aerobic activity to meet the guidelines? As mentioned in a previous post, one must get 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise /week to sustain health; or exert 1000 purposeful calories/week for BASIC health improvements. We need 2.5 hours/week of physical activity at moderate level.
Not getting enough physical activity increases risk of early death. Being active helps to prevent CAD, HBP, Type II diabetes, breast and colon cancer, falls and depression.
Health Track class will help introduce you to all the Performance related aspects of physical fitness: Power, coordination, balance, agility, speed . These are not just important for athletes, but they are important for all, especially older adults who want to maintain their independance. Health Track is a stuctured class that covers all the aspects mentioned in a 75 minutes session. Come on out and get your healthy dose of exercise!

How does exercise help?
1. Makes your heart stronger. A stronger heart pumps more blood with less effort.
2. Regular Exercise helps you to maintain a healthy weight. Weight loss helps to lower BP
3. Exercise works like a BETA-BLOCKER medication to slow your heart rate and lower your blood pressure.

It takes 1-3 monthes of REGULAR exercise to have an impact on blood pressure.

Did you know that you need 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise/week to sustain health?? Or 75 minutes of vigourous health? Better yet, a mix of these two at doses of 10 minutes at a time combined with muscle strengthening activities TWICE/week!
Sounds easy! But maybe you, or someone you know needs a little motivation to do this. I have the perfect class for you! Health Track! Currently it is offered once a week every Tuesday at 10am. It's about an hour long and I will take care of providing the moderate intensity aerobic workout /walking and strength training exercises. Full body workout that is perfect for seniors!!
