As an End of Life doula, the career I hold is one of its own! I was at an event a while back where a lady had mentioned this book about a “Death Doula” which is one in the same, except I prefer End of Life Doula! That night I was telling my man all about the event, and this book, and of course it arrives at the house Amazon prime, because he’s just that incredible!

ANYWAY, as I read through this book, that started off in a whole different world to mine, I thought I wouldn’t like it. I couldn’t have been more wrong! I cried so many tears, laught out loud and shared pictures of paragraphs to those close to me because I just couldn’t believe how it felt like I was reading a book written about me!

There is one paragraph that really hit me hard, it hit me hard because this is me to a T! This is how much I love my clients each day I’m with them, even when I’m not with them, and adter they’re gone. It was just a really interesting way to explain just how much “I love you” can be said to a client, in a different way. That paragraph reads;

“A death doula is one stop shopping; I am a general contractor of death. The way I like to describe it is like this: if you want butter pecan ice cream at 3am and you’re on hospice. You might be able to ask a volunteer to get you some when he or she visits next. If you hire a death doula, and you want that ice cream at 3am, she’ll get it for you. And if you hire me, I will already have it waiting in the freezer.”

My job is never easy! But death can be just as beautiful as child birth if done properly! It’s an absolute honour to be that saving grace to my clients and their families in the final days, to be the strength for them, when they’ve run out! To become a part of their family for that time, and for years later! The friendships and love that blossom from my daily job, are some of the ones I treasure most!

So, if you’d like to understand on a deeper level, just what and why I am a proud End of Life Doula, you can always reach out and ask any and all questions! You can text me anytime if you’re struggling with Grief due to the loss of a loved one and I’ll walk with you, through it! I’m a call away during that terrible time, 780-994-CARE (2273) if you need me! And if you’d like to borrow this book (I do want it back) you’re welcome too! The more people understand what we End of Life Doula’s do, the more people will benefit from the services, care, love and support we offer!!

❤️

Thank you, Jodi Picoult, for your incredible book about a women, and group of us women, who devote our lives to the service of others at the end of their lives! You did a phenomenal job on this novel, and I’m blessed there is a book, that others can read, to understand why we do what we do!

As an end of life doula, I deal with these forms on the regular, and what these forms contain are so important!! Here is a breakdown of each form!

I’d be honoured to help you get things in order, and your wishes down on paper! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

-Make sure all bank accounts have direct beneficiaries. The beneficiary need only go to the bank with your death certificate and an ID of their own.

- TOD = Transfer On Death deed if you own a home. Completing this document and filing it with the court saves your heirs thousands. This document allows you to transfer ownership of your home to your designee. All they need to do is take their ID and your Death Certificate and they will then have the deed signed over. Doing this will avoid the home having to go through probate.

- Living Will: Allows one to put in writing exactly what you want done in the event you cannot speak for yourself when it comes to healthcare decisions.

- Durable Power of Attorney: Allows one to designate a person to make legal decisions if one is no longer competent to do so.

- Power of Attorney for Healthcare: This document allows one to designate someone to make healthcare decisions for their person.

- Last Will and Testament: Designates to whom personal belongings will go too.

- Funeral Planning Declaration: States one’s wishes as far as disposition of the body and the service/s.

- If the above documents are completed, you can AVOID probate. If all the above is not done, you have to open an estate account at the bank. All money that doesn’t have direct beneficiaries goes into this account. You have to have your executor to open the estate account. The executor also has to publicize your death in the newspaper or post publication at the courthouse, to allow anyone to make a claim on your property. - It’s a complete nuisance.

- Make a list of all banks and account numbers, all investment institutions with account numbers, lists of credit cards, utility accounts, etc. Leave clear instructions as to how and when these things are paid. Make sure heirs knows where life insurance policies are located.

- Make 100% sure SOMEONE knows your Apple ID, bank ID account logins and passwords, or had access to this information (in a safe or filing cabinet)

- Make sure you have titles for all automobiles, campers, motorcycles etc

- MOST IMPORTANTLY!- Talk with those closest to you and make all your wishes KNOWN. Talk to those whom you’ve designated, as well as those close to you whom you did not designate. - Do this to explain why your decisions were made and to avoid any lingering questions or hurt feelings.

Hope this lights a spark to encourage all your friends and family to take care of these things and to make it easier for those we all leave behind. There is no template for these documents. Please do not waste your time contacting me for such. I do not have any, or any to give away, or for sale, because these are quite simply, written documents, in your own words, and an exercise in just instructing your wishes to be carried out in detail in plain English.

The above list at least helps you start an important conversation with your loved ones.

NOTE: These are documented statements that are made by you, as to your wishes and instructions. There is no standard template in Common Law.

This is 100% the impact I hope to leave on all the clients I work with, as well as their families! ❤️
